I am looking for a Pediatric Gastroenterologist for my 7 year old. Years ago she went to Dr. Sirlin but he no longer participates in our health plan (United Healthcare PPO). Does anyone have any good recommendations?

We see Dr. Ian Leibowitz for my 3 year-old's recently diagnosed celiac disease. We've only been seeing him since August and so far so good. We've been to his office by Fairfax Hospital, but he also has one in Herndon (going there in Nov).

We are also seeing Dr. Leibowitz. He's only seen my son once so I don't have an opinion yet. He was recommended by our ENT who said he is the least likely to do invasive procedures. He also has an office in Landsdowne which is very convenient.

Too bad about Dr. Sirlin. Our son was seeing him for reflux issues when he was a toddler - we loved him.

We've been to both Sirlin and Leibowitz. We liked Sirlin but when he stopped taking insurance, we went to Leibowitz in Fairfax. He was nice enough...but....ironically, we got left with a $300 bill despite having UHC PPO. He spent just enough time with us to extend our acid reflux prescription originated by Sirlin. Billing is always questionable when working with Children's Hospital. This time it was so high due to 'outpatient facility' which Children's told us applies to all of Leibowitz's appts - which went against our deductible combined with Leibowitz himself who elected to charge a $400 initial consultation rate that we were told he would use his 'regular' rate for follow-ups. While insurance covered some of the overall bill, it was ridiculous to think it would have been cheaper to go to Sirlin, right down the street, and file an out of network claim. So, hopefully you have better insurance but I would try to confirm some of it in advance just in case. Otherwise, both Dr's were good with our little girl.

OMG, we are SO lucky then! We switched from UHC PPO to BCBS PPO January 2010. Granted, every plan is different and our employer's coverage may just be really good. But we've only paid our co-pay (not even a specialist upcharge) to see Dr. Leibowitz and nothing, nada, zilch for all the hospital costs for her biopsy.

We've only seen Dr. Leibowitz 3 times so far - initial referral from ped, celiac biopsy and then biopsy follow up. We will go regularly for quarterly bloodwork so hopefully our insurance coverage will continue to be just as good.

Both of our girls have been patients of Dr. Sirlin, and we've been really happy with him. To be clear - if you have UHC PPO, you can still see him and pay only your regular co-pay at your visit. His office will submit the insurance and then bill for any additional costs not covered by insurance. The only thing you need to be aware of is that it will be covered at your 'out of network' rates instead of in-network. (For us, that meant a standard visit cost us about $12 more than it used to.)
