I can only imagine what the cost of a lunch would be if everything on the list was indeed removed.

Unfortunately, healthy, in this case won't be cheap.

If it means less childhood obesity and the early adult onset of hypertension and diabetes, then healthy is indeed cheaper.

Getting a child outside and playing instead of TV and video games works wonders too.

one truth is that no matter how healthy or unhealthy the lunches are, if they don't taste good, the kids won't eat them. The boy's opinion on BWHS lunches: :hurl:

next we'll see costs rising in waste because kids are throwing away the celery sticks and apples. I'm all for offering healthy choices- which, looking at the high school menu- they do offer salads, fruits and veggies. it's the stuff that they cook that makes him gag.

I'm making my son's lunches now- I like the control over what he eats at lunch and he LOVES my cooking- win win!

    Debbie Rose- School Board

The Health, Safety, Wellness, and Transportation Committee met tonight. The Committee heard a presentation from Jennifer Hein, representing Real Food For Kids Loudoun, on the concerns of artificial preservatives, chemicals and dyes in the food served to LCPS students. The Committee also heard from Ms. Mary Prall, Manager of Menus, and Ms. Jimmy Demastes, Food Services Supervisor, about what LCPS is doing to reduce harmful ingredients in the food served and increase healthy, locally grown choices. To briefly summarize, both the parent group and LCPS staff are in agreement on the goals to reduce or eliminate these ingredients from the food served and to find ways to use more locally grown food products. The Committee members had to leave to attend a hearing on boundaries in Dulles South, but as I left, the two groups (parents and LCPS admin) were seated at the table continuing the conversation. I firmly believe that is the best way to get things done- get the stakeholders together to discuss the issue, develop solutions, and work toward a common goal. If this issue is important to you, I encourage you to get in touch with Jennifer Hein.

Didn't Mrs Obama already put a healthy school lunch program in place?

Yes, but republicans countered with their "Put the Lard Back In Lunch" program because that's how politics works nowadays it seems ;)
