A Notice from Patriot Disposal: In the past month we have experienced extremely high levels of contaminated recycle loads due to the use of plastic bags. The use of plastics bags causes many issues, mainly by clogging the machinery at the recycling facilities. Please do not use plastic bags to bundle your recycling or recycle plastic bags all together.

The practice of removing plastic bags from our local recycling stream will reduce strain on our recycling facilities and landfills. Contamination is the primary reason why recycling is ending up in the landfills. Please help increase our local recycling footprint while reducing pressure on our local haulers and disposal facilities.

Harris Teeter and Giant each have recycling bins for bags.

You can also drop your plastic bags off at the recycling center at the county landfill off Evergreen Mills Road during their normal business hours.

Here is a simple way to remember how to recycle.
    1. Throw the plastic shopping bags, amazon packing 'bubble bags', and anything else plastic bag related into the trash (or consolidate them to recycle at Harris Teeter)
    2. Put your recycled cans, bottles, cardboard, in the recycling bin.
    3. Save the environment and earth for our kids.
Take the time to separate the plastic from all the other recycles.

You can’t go back and change the beginning but you can start where you are & change the ending.

This notice should be posted regularly in the Newsletter. Most of my neighbors still put their recyclables in a clear plastic bag even though they know they should be loose.

I don't understand why we are all supposed to recycle but people keep making it harder to recycle. Why did they remove the recycle bin for bags here?

Seems like they are removing these bins everywhere and forcing people to go back to bags. Bags that tear, rip get soggy and have no handles. I guess people forgot why we got rid of paper in the first place.

At least with plastic I could reuse those bags around the house for other things.

    Ah progress. Oh well.

They're pernicious, never photodegrade and clog up our waterways. The Chesapeake is full of micro-plastics that is killing fish and water fowl. And then it gets carried out to sea and causes the same harm. I'm glad to finally see things turnaround but I thinks it's a little too late.

Maybe if we made it easier and not harder to recycle the plastic bags as I said.

What challenge are you having to recycle plastic bags? There is a collection bin at the Broadlands Nature Center, Harris Teeter, Giant, and Wegmans to name a few places.

I thought the collection site in Broadlands was removed.
