I have a dell laptop . Recently it had trouble with power cable. We used to play around with it and keep it in the same position so it charges battery. when that did not work anymore, we went to circuit city and they suggested a generic power cord/adapter. we purchased it it was fine for few months. Again I started to have trouble...

now I started to think is it the connector on the motherboard that is doing this?

If I call Dell, I will be ripped off. anyone any suggestions ?

    Thanks

no . I would have called Dell if it is still under warranty. warranty just expired before this problem started.

OK - I just want to make certain I understand:

When the power cord is plugged in and the battery dead, can you use the laptop? Or is it just a battery charging issue? How old is the laptop and what model Dell?

no the battery is not dead , when the power cord is plugged, laptop is using power from battery as the cord connection is not proper. if I play with it little bit, I see that laptop got powered thru AC adapter and not battery . and a hard breath and the power is again from battery.

It is a little over 2 years and the model is Dell inspiron model 7000? ( not sure of that number.. I am at work now) .

It is not a battery charging issue because when I hold it proper position , battery gets charged .

problem is either with the AC adapter or the the place it is plugged into the laptop ( what ever it is called).

Inspiron - yeah, we had a bunch of those here and your diagnosis is correct - it's the socket on the laptop. The fact that you "fix" the issue if you manipulate the plug is the clue.

It's off to the shop with it!

    Call these guys:

    http://www.richardscomputer.com/

They are primarily a Toshiba shop but I think they service all brands. they do not ship the unit out, they repair it themselves. If you don't want to drive to them, they will give you an RMA to ship the unit.

I assume you bought it with a credit card. Call up your credit card company, most will double your warranty for free for up to a year. You may already be covered by your credit card and not even know it. It's defintely worth a call since you said you are just past the manufacturers warranty. They will ask for details and then tell you where to send it (or let you send it where you want) then they reimburse you the full amount.

My sister-in-law just contacted me and it turns out she has the very same issue, regarding the loose power connection on her Dell.

Has anyone gotten it repaired either locally or through Dell? What were the approximate costs, etc? How was the service you got?
