Just in case any of you have not read this yet, here is an incident that happened last night:

"Two Ashburn men were arrested last night in Broadlands after they were determined to be involved in an attempted robbery.
A deputy in the area responded to the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Broadlands Boulevard around 5:30 PM and quickly located a vehicle that matched the lookout description provided by the victim in the incident. The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of Ashburn Farm Parkway and Claiborne Parkway.

In the incident a 30-year-old Ashburn woman had apparently asked two
men in a white Acura for a ride. The subjects, a 17-year-old and
21-year-old, who are both from Ashburn, drove the car to a remote location. Both men then demanded money from the woman. The victim refused and the second subject, 21-year-old Jovaughn Johnson, attempted to strike her. The victim then fled the vehicle and alerted the Sheriff's Office. A search conducted by deputies of the subjects and the vehicle revealed several bags of suspected marijuana and measuring devices. Both men were taken to the Magistrates Office. The 17-year-old was released into the custody of his guardian and Mr. Johnson was charged with Attempted Robbery. Mr. Johnson was released on a $10,000 unsecured bond. The incident remains under investigation."

Speaking of crime does anyone know why there is a car with Security written on the side parked at the entrance to the new Southern Walk apartments every evening/night? I assume this is to prevent construction materials from being stolen. Does anyone know?

Wow. Crime in our neighborhood, and there is no hospital nearby.
    How is that possible?

SD: I can't believe that don't know this, but there ACTUALLY IS a hospital nearby. It's called Loundoun Hospital, and it take 5 minutes to get there.

Farscape, there WILL be crime in our n'hood. It's a fact of our society. But I'll say we still have lower crime than other areas. Just use common sense and lock your car and home and be alert for suspious activity. Ashburn is not Southeast DC but it's also not Mayberry. So put some wheel locks on your bling bling wheels and keep a baseball bat in the closet incase some idiot decides to invade your home.

So, I crawl out of bed on a lazy Sunday morning and read this! Now, I am going back to bed... Either that or I'll start supporting VACLIFF and his defraud-the-government-and-the-taxpayers-while-overcharging-the-poor-and-leading-to-higher-taxes (!) hospital so I don't have too far for my "psychotherapy" if I go off the deep end.

Sorry, Killer_Bee- I think you're already there! I can't even begin to imagine how you think this hospital will raise taxes. Given that they will pay millions of dollars annually in property taxes (non profit hospitals like Loudoun pay ZERO tax dollars), I don't know what you base your assumption on.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, so I am sorry if this repeats what others have said. It seems like there is a cast of regulars in the forums who only snipe back and forth. I hope that is not the case.

I am not in favor of another hospital in our area, but I think that scare tactics are not the way to resolve this issue. Still, I'm GENUINELY and TRULY concerned for the safety of my children and my neighbors. Think about what hospitals and psychatric programs bring: violence, drug users, burning medical waste, pollution, and the possibility of "imbalanced" in our community.

Also, I do see how this hospital could raise our taxes. I have read the articles about how Columbia/HCA committed a lot of Medicare fraud (from articles posted in the forums and elsewhere). We pay for Medicare to help out our elderly and poor, right? So, if this hospital goes in as planned and HCA gets up to its "old tricks", we will have to pay for it with higher taxes. I, for one, think that the government should keep its hands out of our family's purse!!!

    Oh Stephanie,
I won't go into, again, about all your misguided perceptions.
There is no violence, burning waste, pollution, etc. associated with the hospital. You've obviously listened to the negative propaganda machine without even attempting to get the facts. Case in point: show me one itty, biity thing that even HINTED that there would be burning waste with this hospital proposal. There isn't.
I do see your point about the fraud. They did it, got caught, and paid a huge fine. I guess it's fortunate they're such a well run company that can afford it!
As far as taxes increasing, you'll see your Loudoun County taxes increase annually far greater than any taxes you pay to the federal government.
Welcome to the forum. And remember: one person's snipe is another person's debate!

Well run companies don't commit fraud in the first place. And don't think for one second that the cost of that fine wasn't passed on to the patients.

    Mearan-
What is your impression of MCI/World Com? They commited fraud to the tune of 8-9 billion dollars. I doubt the 4000 or so employees a few miles down the road feel their company should not be doing business here.
As far as the cost of the fines being passed on, I have been to both Loudoun and Reston (owned by HCA)hospitals numerous times over the past several years. I don't see any difference in the cost for services.

Cliff, I won't rehash old issues with you, however a few points that need to be discussed. Have you been to an HCA hospital after they have been fined or before? It will be interesting to see if the price of healthcare will be the same. Also I posted a few questions a while ago and you have not responded. I would like clarification on the HCA "wish list" and if they are trying to buy support in our community instead of establishing support based on their reputation and good deeds...

    Cliff,

I know you aren't trying to compare MCI/Worldcom with a hospital that's in the business of life and death. And let's not try to justify fraud as long as the company involved keeps people employed. Being for the hospital is one thing, but we don't have to be tolerant of criminal behavior.

    Donna-
First, yes I have been to Reston hospital since the fines, and no, I haven't noticed a difference.
I don't know what questions you are referring to that I have not responded to. Please refresh my memory. In reviewing posts, I think I found a few:
The "major roads" the helicopter pilot referred to were Rte 28, Rte 7, Greenway, Rte 659.
Regarding sirens, they are "generally" turned off entering residential areas except in emergencies. A house hit by lightning would probably be an emergency. a patient with a life threatening injury would be an emergency. I would agree with you that siren noise will increase if the hospital is built. Hopefully, a Rte 659 emergency entrance will mitigate it.
There are several questions that I, and others, have asked that you have not responded to as well. I leave it up to you to respond, or not respond to them.
Regarding what you refer to as a "wish list": I do know that HCA donated $2500 to Hillside PTO last year for their playground campaign. I believe Hillside was thrilled with the contribution. HCA didn't publicize it, they just did it. It would seem that if they were trying to "buy" support, they would have made an effort to publicize it.
I supplied HCA with some financial needs that Mill Run, Eagle Ridge, and the HOA have. This was my idea, not theirs. What they will do with it, I don't know. If HCA, Loudoun Hospital, or any other corporation wished to make donations to these entities,I imagine all would accept them.

vacliff: A post or two above you said, "I supplied HCA with some financial needs that Mill Run, Eagle Ridge, and the HOA have. This was my idea, not theirs."

It is so sad to know that HCA's donations, as worthy as they were, came right out of the wallets and purses of the sick.

    Stephanie,

Why do you think HCA's donations "came right out of the wallets and purses of the sick?" Is it because you think HCA made excess profits and used some of that profit to fund this project? Corporations are in business to make money, so it shouldn't be a surprise that they made a profit and used some of that profit to benefit the community, as most large corporations do through out the country.

Here's a quote from a week of 9/30/02 article in the Washington Business Journal on LHC profits: "Loudoun Hospital Center in Lansdowne appears to be on the upswing after finishing fiscal year 2002, which ended June 30, with a $14 million surplus in operating revenue." In fact, LHC went from a $27M deficit in 1998 and 1999 to a surplus of $855K in 2000. That's almost a $28M surplus if they went from that deficit to a surplus in one year! How come the "non-profit" LHC is making so much money? Are they taking money right out of the wallets and purses of the sick to make this much money?

Yes, I realize a non-profit hospital makes money (i.e., profits) to fund new improvements and pay for past improvements, but almost $28M in one year! Who do you think paid for that?

I am not an economist or a businessman, so please forgive the simplicity of a housewife's views...

If HCA's hospitals get rich off sickness and misfortune (like accidents), then how could they not be taking money right out of the wallets and purses of the sick? It is a poverty for a hospital to make money off suffering. Rather than make stockholders rich, non-profit hospitals re-invest their money into the communities that they serve.

Here's one of the ways the Loudoun "not for profit" hospital "reinvests" its profits:
The Loudoun Hospital CEO has a salary and benefits package of over $525,000. This is about $200,000 more than the salary HCA would pay a CEO for a hospital generating similar revenues. Loudoun's in house lawyer is paid over %300,000. Nice to see how the "not for profit" invests in the community there!
Do not believe that "not for profit" does not generate profits. "For profit" hospitals pay stockholders, "not for profits" pay bondholders.
I'm getting further information on Inova salaries. I am curious if HCA is stingy or if Loudoun is exceedingly generous.

    Hi, VaCliff,

Personally, I think that those salaries are a little extreme, too. However in fairness, I did some internet searches and found out that Loudoun Hospital's pay for its CEO (according to your sources, which I could not verify) is a little bit low! In some salary surveys that I saw, there are hospital CEO's who make over $1 million a year. Here are a few newspaper links:

    http://dayton.bizjournals.com/dayton/stories/2003/06/16/story3.html
    http://www.nebhworker.org/archive/caritas.html
    http://pittsburgh.bizjournals.com/pittsburgh/stories/2000/09/11/story1.html?t=printable

Also, I thought that you might want to pay particular attention to this article:

    http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/business/4375641.htm

It shows how for-profit hospitals pay their CEO's less in cash compensation that non-profits, but then load them up on stock options that they do not disclose unless pushed. So, VaCliff, I think that HCA may not have been entirely truthful when they told you that they would be paying the CEO of the proposed hospital CEO a low salary when you factor in options.
