    The Route 28 Public Private Partnership announces that major detours are planned for northbound and southbound Route 28 at Sterling Boulevard October 13-15, 2006.
    As the Sterling Boulevard Interchange construction nears completion, a major task remains. During the weekend of October 13-15, both southbound and northbound Route 28 will be detoured completely so that a 96" diameter storm pipe can be installed across all lanes of Route 28. The work hours for these detours are:

    Begins Friday, October 13, 8:00 p.m. - Ends Saturday, October 14, 10:00 a.m.

    Begins Saturday October 14, 6:00 p.m. – Ends Sunday, October 15, 10:00 a.m.

    A detailed description of these detours is as follows:

    Southbound Route 28:

    1. All southbound Route 28 traffic will be narrowed to a single lane after the Route 625 Interchange;
    2. All southbound traffic will be detoured to the new Sterling Boulevard Interchange ramp leading to westbound Sterling Boulevard;
    3. All traffic will turn left onto Pacific Boulevard;
    4. All traffic will turn left onto Route 606 – Old Ox Road;
    5. Southbound traffic can then exit from Route 606 to Route 28 South;
    6. Sterling Boulevard traffic can then exit from Route 606 to Route 28 North to Sterling Boulevard, or
    7. Sterling Boulevard traffic can continue on Route 606 and turn left on Shaw Road to Sterling Boulevard.

    Northbound Route 28:

    1. All northbound traffic will be narrowed to a single lane at the Route 606 Interchange;
    2. All northbound traffic will follow a detour through the Sterling Interchange. Note that traffic will remain on Route 28 during this detour.
    3. Northbound traffic heading to eastbound Sterling Boulevard will still be able to turn right at Sterling Boulevard.

    Notes:
    The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office will be assisting in these detours.
    The backup dates for this work will be the following weekend, October 20-23.
    More information about the Route 28 project is available online at www.28freeway.com/

    We were coming home from Chuck E. Cheese's at Dulles last night at 8:30 and saw this detour/backup from the flyover to Waxpool in front of Wegmans. Ouch! There was a line of cars in the right hand lane with their reverse lights on trying to back up to get into the flyover lane. Dangerous.

    Those stop times are a crock, btw. I tried to take 28 south at noon on Saturday and it was backed up to the entrance ramp.

    yeap, got caught in that well designed mess. It's nice that they had a stop time, but they definately missed it.

    I wish they would have done some pre-signing and listed the detours on waxpool so I would have had a chance to avoid the backup.

    A simple sign around LCP saying 28S construction ahead would have allowed for traffic to ditch around AOL to old ox. or even skip 28s and head behind belfort.

    I think I did see a blinking sign there out on Waxpool? Maybe it was across from 5 Guys or perhaps near Broderick? Hmmm?

    Anyway, it was only suppose to be Fri & Sat. Hope it is cleared up now? Will be great when that light at Sterling is removed...smooth sailing!
