There is a new wrestling club in Ashburn and the coaches are AWESOME!!! My son attended a 1-week camp in August and several pre-season practices with Coach Ruffin and Coach Rogers. Coach Ruffin is a recent graduate of the University of Iowa (one of the top wrestling schools) and Coach Rogers is the assistant coach at Stone Bridge. They are both incredible with young kids -- teaching them wrestling techniques and keeping the practices fun.

Ruff Wrestling Club practices at Stone Bridge High School on weekday evenings (Mon/Tues/Thur) and the meets are on the weekends (usually Sundays). The first meet is December 15. The season runs through February. The registration fee is $150 + a $30 fee to NVWF. Wrestling is actually one of the least expensive sports -- there are no additional fees for the regular season meets.

The club is open to boys and girls ages 5 and up. The kids who are currently signed up for Ruff Wrestling are between 6 and 10 (1st-4th grade). For the meets, the kids are paired up based on age and weight. In addition, the first year wrestlers only go against other first year wrestlers. The age break-down is based on the year of birth. All of the kids your child will wrestle against at the meets are usually within 4 or 5 pounds.

Wrestling improves balance, reflexes, strength, endurance, and agility. In addition to the physical advantages, it also improves sportsmanship, mental toughness, and self-confidence.

Here is some more information about the age brackets for the meets. (They are based on birth year).
    Bantam (2007-2008)
    Midget (2005-2006)
    Junior (2003-2004)
    Intermediate (2001-2002)
    Senior (1999-2000)
We are especially looking for more elementary school age kids. Please email or call this week if you are interested. Space is limited and the coaches will be ordering t-shirts soon.

Bring your child for a free trial practice THURSDAY 11-21 at Stone Bridge High School in the wrestling room. The kids should wear comfortable clothes and bring water. Practice is 6:30-8pm.

Please email me at suzystrier@yahoo.com or you can contact Coach Ruffin at 319-621-0334 or ruffwrestling@gmail.com if you are planning to attend.

COME TO THE INFORMATIONAL MEETING ON THURSDAY NIGHT, MARCH 20 @7PM AT STONE BRIDGE IN THE AUX. GYM FOR THE SPRING SEASON. THE FIRST WEEK OF PRACTICES IS FREE!! ALL EXPERIENCE LEVELS ARE WELCOME!!! PRACTICES START THE WEEK OF MARCH 31.

The practices for RuFF Wrestling Club will be at Stone Bridge High School. For the younger kids, it will probably be on Wednesday evenings and Sundays (not sure what time yet). I'm not sure of the schedule for the older kids. There will also be several spring/summer clinics - these will be held on Saturdays at no additional charge.
