I was just in the Safeway and I asked the manager when the Safeway gas station would be built. He told me that "bids were out and it would be up and running within 4 months."

I have no other details about the gas station.

Does anyone really think it will be any cheaper than the other gas stations in this area? I think it's BS that you can drive down belmont ridge to south riding and get gas for almost $0.20/gallon cheaper....

    Darn price gouging...

Much like the drycleaners out here too...wouldn't it be funny if they were both owned by same person? haha

I've lived in Ashburn since 1998...and it seems like the businesses that open here automatically charge more because they can. I for one try to avoid filling up at the gas stations in Ashburn because of the price. I have a friend who calls Ashburn, "Cashburn".

is the .20 difference worth the time and fuel ecomony lost driving further away? There is peace of mind in the fact that we spend less money but how much are we really saving when we factor in: quality of life time at home, potholes, the fuel cost of driving further away, etc..

any mathmatics majors care to work out an equation or spreadsheet so we can break it down? :)

To me - it's a matter of principal.....the more you buy gas in Ashburn, the less competitive it will get. I don't like giving them the satisfaction. I have a very short commute to work, so I only fill up about once a month and I don't go out of my way to do it.

I don't necessarily agree. The more gas you buy in Ashburn, the greater the demand will be for gas in Ashburn, which should result in an increased supply of gas in Ashburn (more gas stations), thereby increasing competition and resulting in lower prices.

I'm not a business/economics guy, though, so I could be totally wrong with this...

The problem is the vast number of Exxon stations in the area. They really dont have to compete one with another. Now, if you get a Racetrack or Sheetz in here (like out on Rt. 50 or in Leesburg) competition will force Exxon to drop prices like it happens in those areas. With the exception of the circle K I have not seen anything but an Exxon within 7 miles of my home. More competition is needed before the local prices drop.

I know all about supply and demand.....but the problem is we need OTHER gas stations besides Exxon/Mobil!!!!! Maybe then the gas prices will go down! But, alas...we live in Ashburn......they can charge more because we all live in expensive houses.....just like the new hair place in the new plaza.....Radiance....$60.00 for a haircut with an experienced hairstylist! I don't think so.:(

    All,

We are getting another gas station -- Safeway Gas. Why not wait until the station opens before complaining about what its prices might be. I'll be surprised if Safeway Gas isn't cheaper than the nearest Exxon and Mobile stations.

Besides, there are other gas stations beside those in Ashburn, unless you only drive around in Ashburn. I've lived in Broadlands over 3 years and can count on one hand (with fingers left over) the number of times I've gased in Ashburn. I don't drive out of my way to gas but do gas when I'm in an area other than Ashburn.

    Hello all,

Just an update on the Safeway Gas Station, we hope to be open by 12/1/04, maybe a little sooner as this is our first one in Virginia. As far as price on gas, it is high, everywhere, but I think we will be cheaper than anyone around.

Actually I thought the Circle K was now selling Sunoco gas? Hmmm...I've never heard of Safeway Gas before. Has anyone else? Is Safeway Gas a subsidiary of Safeway?

you all also forget many stations are FRANCHISES.. they set their own prices.. regardless of brand. Its not monopolizing, its vendors only discounting as much as they feel they need to. If they feel they can sell at 1.99, but everyone else is 2.09, they'll probably sell at 2.07.. just enough to be different but not give money away. It doesn't take a genius to figure out gas stations only discount lower then their neighbors when they feel the need to, and even then only enough to be different. No station wants a price war, so everyone probably plays nice.

I heard there would be a 3-cent discount on Safeway gas with the Safeway Club card. Is that correct?

some places like Farm Fresh down south will give you discounts based on promotional purchases inside... like "save $0.07/gallon up to 15 gallons"... maybe safeway will do that.

    I'm depressed that 'gassigns.org' even exists. :(

I guess there's something for everyone on the web.
