Loudoun County Public Schools have already announced that schools will be closed on Thursday, 2-15-07.

Looks like Fairfax and Prince William are closed for tomorrow also. Keep in mind even when things look ok here, western Loudoun can get hit alot harder.

With all this melting today when it refreezes tonight early tomorrow could be a worse nightmare compared to this morning especially if there is a lot of traffic. Just hit an ice patch just off the side of the road and you may never get to work. The weather report does not even put the temp above freezing for the next several days. Snow is one thing but ice is deadly. Even the mailman had chains on today.

I give the schools credit for once for bring pro active so our children are safe.

And are all the sidewalks/trails clear so the kids who walk to school can do so safely? What about the bus stops? Are they clear or would the kids have to stand in the street to wait for the bus? I would much rather see them err on the side of keeping our kids home and safe. My father is a bus driver in another county and he worries just watching the young ones step on the bus from icy streets sometimes.

I think they finally got closed last week in many places in upper state NY :)

Besides do you really want to drive with many that have rarely driven on ice and snow if ever. :) Even tho I can drive under most conditions it's that other nut in that suv flying down the road like their invincible that scares me. I have had 4 wheel drives all my life and believe me, they have serious limits and can hydroplane with those big tires very very easily. Also those big tires love to slide on ice. They don't look so invincible when they end up in a ditch or worse.

They have big plows too. I'm from WESTERN NY, not Upstate....small town about 20 miles from Buffalo where we get the lake effect snowsqualls...right in the snow belt...they had a foot more of snow overnight....no schools were canceled. I don't enjoy driving around here with these people who flat out don't know how to drive...I'd rather they stay home.

It really bothers me when people complain about things that are meant to keep their children safe. Obviously, nothing serious has happened to them or their family. Is it worth risking your child's life just so they can go to school? Wouldn't you feel terrible if school was open and your child got hurt, or worse, killed walking/driving/riding the bus to school? Just enjoy these days you have with your child...there are plenty of days that they go to school!

I think that the real issue is that VDOT does not plow the roads. The roads would be fine if they were plowed. Look at anywhere else in the country. Do you think Colorado shuts down when they get 3-4 inches of snow or ice? One half of our street got plowed about noon today-we think that someone hired a contractor to do it. So that half of the street is now completely clear and dry. No ice there... If we had ALSO been plowed at noon, we would be clean and dry and able to safely go to work tomorrow...

That's my complaint Mdcrim...it's VDOT. I don't want any kids getting hurt either. With all the snow WNY gets.....my goodness those kids would never get an education...everything is plowed during and after a storm constantly...one Christmas when we were visiting - 18 inches of snow fell overnight....looked out the next morning...EVERYTHING was plowed...People around here always say "we don't get that much snow so there's no need for more plows, heck yes there is....we've lived here since 1984, we're not newcomers.....it never ceases to amaze me the way they plow here. BTW - VDOT just came down our street and did a horrible job....only plowed one lane.....unbelievable.

They were working on Broadlands Blvd around 5PM. Not sure what they were doing, since they barely flattened the ridges from the people who were out and about.

Not to mention, they were barely moving.... guess the whole momentum thing means nothing around here.

tyger - I am sure that the budget for snow removal in your old county is significantly higher than what we have here. Also, during the winter, ALOT of places PA and above live with snow on a frequent basis. We live with snow a few times a year.

i'm happy that schools are closed these roads are ridiculas.
i couldn't even drive, and tonight the roads should stay frozen and hard to plow.
so, i'm happy. it's all about safety.

I wish the roads were clear! I was the only one to make it to work today (10:30) for my office of 10 and due to a work priority, I am stuck here until 0600 tomorrow!
