There was an interesting question/answer in the Washington Post Dr. Gridlock column today (June 3). John Mileo, Ashburn, asked how come there are flashing lights that start a school zone speed restriction but no end of school zone sign at the other end to know when exiting the speed restriction. The only way to know the school zone speed restriction has ended is by noticing the flashing school zone lights located on the opposite side of the road.

VDOT spokesman Ryan Hall says the schools systems are responsible for setting up the notification flashing light signs but VDOT is responsible for installing the end of school zone signs. If the school system doesn't notify VDOT, the signs don't get installed. I guess that's the case at Hillside Elementary because I don't remember seeing any end of school zone signs.

However, the really interesting thing about this is that according to VDOT's Hall, "you cannot be cited for speeding through a school zone if the zone does not have the sign designating the end." Looks like an action item for the HOA to pass to the developer and/or school system. Anyone get a speeding ticket in that school zone that they should have contested??

Frankly ... I have no sympathy for anyone getting a ticket in the school zone, even if it is not marked properly. Anyone who cannot slow to 25MPH for a 1/4 mile deserves one!
