The power of the video ever since Rodney King. My criminal attorney brother says it is a powerful tool in court, much more powerful then still pictures.

Now with cell phone video you never know if you when are in the movies and could be the next star:) I found that story recently where the marshalls said the kid try to run them down. The kids attorney found not one but several people that took video from their cell phones that looks like a different story.

The way it these days if you are on public property you are fair game for the video, of course you can video anyone on your property. Makes you want to dress up anytime you go out. Lot of people don't know this but the first few feet from the street is not your property even tho you take care of it. Around here it usually is 10 feet. That piece is fair game for video in the public arena. Also remeber when your neighbors walk on it they are not on your property. :)

...and I would be willing to bet that the parents would be very interested to know that their child was out after 1:00 am. At least I would hope they would be interested. There is next to no good reason for a high-school age child to be out that late.

Since you know one of the children in question, I wonder if there is a productive way to get in touch with their parents to let them know, so they can decide if there is value in doing something about it?

I am more inclined to let the parents deal with something like this, as it is really their front-line responsibility. Obviously, if the parents are as helpful as a rock, well then it is back in your hands etc...

I still think that the authorities should be notified now, although be aware that this may make you a target for future incidents.

    Already done.

Deputy came by last night and viewed the footage (at which time our electrician happened to be installing three additional lights on the side of our house facing ridgeway) - so if the 02/02/07 deadline passes and the 2 remaining signs are not returned - I have been instructed to call the deputy who agreed to pick up the DVD - Video footage of the kids taking the signs.

Anything in public view is fair game for recording or photographing...we've had this discussion before.

You're right that we can tape (video) and take pictues in"public view" - That's not the case when minors are involved, per Loudoun County Sheriff's -we do not have their "written consent and there is no way for us to hide their identity" - therefore posting the video on a public forum such as this would not be in our best interest.

Well, I would not have approved them! :D

It is truly a shame that you need to light up your property like a strip mall parking lot. On a "brighter" note (HA), people can now enjoy your well-manicured/landscaped property at all hours of the day! :)

Pea - You can blur the faces with a movie editor such as Adobe Premier. Probably more time than it is worth.

What I learned from some of my clients from the far east. If you keep things open you have a far less chance for your home to be broken into or vandalized.

Another words americans like to close in their homes such as drapes shutting out the public turning off lights. You are less likely to be a victim of a break in if you keep your drapes open and some lights on especially at night especially in the public places in your home. Thieves and predators don't want to be seen and will chose a darker target. Also Nice outside lighting thru the night will help keep the predators away. Older Kids that stay up all night also help too :)
