Hi, just got a quote from Sterling BMW for an "inspection II" where they replace the spark plugs etc for $1450 (2005 330Ci 52K miles). They said it needed 5.5 hours at $100+ plus parts (filters, oil etc).

Called my original dealership (out of state) and they quoted $550. Sterling BMW said they must not be doing everything.

Has anyone had luck finding better prices or know what is up with this?

    Thanks, Mike

    That seems high to me.

Spark plugs changes alone are not that difficult to in "most" ANY car let alone a BMW. What other services does the "inspection II" include besides oil and filter?

Mike, you may want to call and talk to Brian, he's their service manager and a great guy. Your manual will have everything the inspection II covers. It's a fairly big service if I remember correctly. I purchased the 100K warranty that covers all maintenance and it's been awesome. Not sure if you can ask them about it, but we've found it to be worth it.

Here is a link with the complete list

Mostly just a lot of inspections and

    • Read out diagnostic system.
    • Check engine cooling system/heater hose connections for leaks. Check coolant level and antifreeze protection level; add coolant if necessary.
Note: Coolant must be replaced every 4 years (time interval begins from vehicle's production date).
    • Check level of brake and clutch fluid in reservoir. Add fluid if required.
    • Replace brake fluid every 2 years (timing interval begins from vehicle's production date).*
    • Check windshield washer fluid level and antifreeze protection. Fill up and/or correct if necessary.
    • Check air conditioner operation.
    • Replace microfilter.
    • Reset Service Indicator.
    • Replace intake air cleaner element.
I can see the ~5 hours for the inspections, most people seem to have paid $6-800. I would pay $800 just to be done with it, at $1450 I'm thinking of buying some metric wrenches.

Especially since the last time they topped off the oil they did not replace the oil cap, causing a warning light to come on after a few days...

I just got my inspection II for X-5 for $450 at another BMW dealership. I never take my car to Sterling BMW. Even BMW of Fairfax is better than Sterling BMW.

Sterling BMW is trying to rip you off. You could do most of the Inspection II yourself and then just take it in for the handful of items you can't/won't do yourself. Agree with the others here, I wouldn't even bother talking to Sterling again. Try a different dealer or try an independent mechanic. You can definitely get a better price.

I do he majority of the work myself and have my independent mechanic do the rest. My last inspection II cost me a few hundered $, but that included new plugs, and fuel filter a long with a few other minor items.

As others have said, the majority of the work can be done in yor own garage and costs nothing.

I woould be more than willing to help you out to get the bulk of it done, then just get the plugs done at a shop (I did not want to risk any issues with the aluminum head).

    Email me at jamesmkelly@hotmail.com

I have most of the tools to do the job and have been working on BMWs for 10 years.

BTW..I have a 2004 330i, so it should be simple.

    I agree Brian is wonderful.

We are on our 2nd BMW, however we haven't run into any out of pocket service charges (as we haven't met the mileage or 4yr threshold). We also purchased the extended warranty on our newly acquired 535xi, so I am really glad to hear your feedback on what seemed like an expensive after market option.

Same here. I've been driving BMWs for about 12 years now and try to do most of the work myself. I know all too well how delicate those aluminum heads are. I had one expensive spark plug job a couple years ago!

All, I really appreciate the comments. James, that was a very kind offer but with the impending holidays and work deadlines I can't spare the time. I've made an appointment at Fairfax BMW, just a little under 500.

    Thanks again, Mike
