*Yawn*...woke up this morning at 5:30am to the sound of the smoke detector in the master bedroom beeping at us every few seconds (how come that always seems to happen really early in the morning?)...no big deal-a battery change would address that...except...we have a water leak that's slowly seeping into the drywall around the detector!

Nothing like a good snowstorm to let you know if something's up with the roof.

I'm thinking (well okay hoping) it might just be some missing flashing, or something equally easy to fix. The stain isn't big and it takes a long time for a drop of water to show up on the detector, but I definitely need this taken care of-ASAP!

I need a licensed, reputable roofing guy. But don't just toss me some names-I need someone you've used before and what your experience was-definitely someone you would hire again.

    Thanks!!

An investigation in the attic (holy cow it's cold up there!) revealed that some melted ice and snow came in through the defunct attic fan, followed the HVAC system down to the insulation, and then on through the ceiling to the smoke detector. We scored some bonus points for discovering a dead bird, too.

I'm contacting Roofer911 to see if something can be done about the fan and especially to see where that bird may have come from. Fortunately, it seems to be minor-thank goodness!!!

Thanks to everyone for your help.

If you would, let us know how the defunct attic fan issue works out. Ours has been non-operative since we moved in, as far as i know (5 yrs ago). Depending on price might be interested in having it looked at.

Your post also makes me think to check the attic for melting snow up there...
