    Hi All! Happy snow day!
I just read this thread from the beginning and thought I'd respond to the few who mentioned how emergency vehicles would get to a house here when the streets have not been plowed.
Our neighbor called 911 last night around 5pm after her daughter had a grand mal seizure (she's home and fine now thank goodness!).
We live on Songbird Court and our street had not been plowed. Had to be almost 15 inches of snow on the ground at that time.
The ambulance, my neighbor told me, was at her door within 10 minutes of her call.
I was out shoveling when they arrived. The ambulance (Ashburn Fire and Rescue) was escorted by their own truck w/plow.
    My neighbor was beyond impressed.
    Just thought I'd share.

I can't say enough good things about Ashburn Fire & Rescue. They are top-notch, absolutely.

Our street, though (Milford - an HOA street, so not on the VDOT list of priorities), has been half-heartedly plowed one lane wide. Since the snow largely ended 14+ hours ago, I find that a pretty unacceptable level of service. I don't expect bare pavement, but I would expect the road to be two lanes wide.

So, what are my dues for again?

I live on a street which is to be plowed by the HOA. So, where are the the plows? There has been no attempt to do anything in this area. At least they could post a message on the boards or something to provide timelines etc. Plow will get to your street around X time. And to think that the HOA has the nerve to pass on an increase for HOA dues in 2010. For what service? At this point, I want a credit for lack of service. :lame:

Sorry to hear this, what street are you on?

I know our street has been plowed by the HOA several times.

Erica - thanks for sharing the story about Ashburn Fire & Rescue they are truly amazing.

Liss, I am not making any excuses for the HOA, but our street has been plowed at least 5 times (starting @ 4:33AM on Sat). Yes on our street looks like only 1 1/2 lanes but it is still passable. I think due to the amount of record breaking snow, the HOA contractor maybe have some difficulties.

lilpea - True, they've been through a number of times; they just haven't done the job WELL. I admit that I may have unrealistic standards, having grown up where heavy snow is the norm, but fewer passes that are more effective would make their job (and ours!) easier in the long run.

We'll be able to get out, which I guess is good enough for now. My fear is that they won't come back and finish the job properly and the snow that's predicted for later in the week will be that much harder to deal with.

Liss - I just ventured outside to walk down our street (we live on the corner) and I now I completely agree with you. Our HOA street does look really bad, considering VDOT's Ridgeway only has snow pack. Maybe the contractor needed to take a break and he will return this afternoon.

Broadlands isn't the only community suffering from waiting for the plows. The Cameron Chase community wasn't plowed at all yesterday and as of this morning had not been plowed today. Perhaps the independent contractors are a bit overwhelmed. The main roads are still a bit snowy and icy so even if you got off your street the main roads need some more time anyway.

Half the crew worked through the night while the other half got some sleep. Personally, I don't want a guy with a huge plow falling asleep at the wheel! They were at full force again this morning at 6 am. This is the worst snowstorm we've had in at least six years. The contractor only has so many people and so much equipment...resources can't magically appear just because there is more snow. The goal is to make the street passable, not clean curb to curb. Please be patient.

Be happy your street is passable. This is what my street looks like

Remember, those rifts are about 14-18" deep too. On the feeder street it's at least snow packed with about 1-1.5 car widths wide. My street is for those with high ground clearance and 4wd.

Here's another view, but you can't really related to the tread depth in this view
    [IMG]

The 4x4s even fish tail all around on this stuff.

Re: So, what are my dues for again?

Why post estimates? So people can complain more if that estimate is not met? Why not focus on working at the best pace they can?

Do you have somewhere essential to be right now? Do you know anyone who can help drive you there with a 4WD?

This is a extreme storm - Do you expect more equipment and people just to magically appear?

    Stop complaining and be realistic.

And for the jabs about your Due increase - try reading the details about why your Dues increased instead of making pointless broad generalizations that completely miss the mark.

We had to dig out about 20' into the road to get to the places with at least some pack. I think I could get out now if I really need to.. but I don't.. so no big deal.

Some perspective... this is the rut in the middle of the road. Can your car traverse this? :)

And the after shot after 2hrs of shoveling

I really hope the people complaining about the condition of roads are not the same neighbors who are not only not bothering with their sidewalk, but are actually piling snow high onto the sidewalk in order to clear their driveway. I realize there is not a lot of room for dumping snow in small townhouse yards, but if your neighbors have figured out how to clear their sidewalks, you can too.

It's kind of frustrating to put a lot of effort into clearing my own part of the sidewalk when my neighbors just dump more snow onto their part of it.

I'll go one step further, I hope the people complaining about the condition of roads actually cleaned their sidewalk and steps.
