Need Advice Where to Download Cell Phone Apps?

I've never downloaded applications for my cell phone... Can anyone recommend some safe, virus-free websites for downloading applications? I just ordered a VX-6900 from Verizon (same as the HTC Touch) and am curious about how this whole apps thing works.

Or are the downloads done directly from the phone? The new phone will be running Windows Mobile so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

bing mobile and google maps mobile are pretty good mapping apps -- iGo8 is a GPS app you should be able to find that will make the phone just like an standalone GPS device

 

Thanks, Boomer. I found some websites but I wasn't sure which ones were safe and which are likely to be malware. The phone is due to arrive tomorrow.
