It depends on how far you are from the access point. If you are close you might be able to get a strong signal from inside your house. Otherwise there is an external attenna about 1 foot by 1 foot that needs to be mounted to get the signal.

    VeroLAN has updated their website:
    http://www.verolan.com

If you take a look at this page http://www.verolan.com/st-poebridges.htm you can get an idea of what the antenna looks like. It's the first gray box. You can see the ruler under it, the antenna is small - about 5"x12".

Now I see what kind of "wireless" internet we're talking about. This is like the technology AT&T developed called "project angel". Box is attached to the house and using a wireless technology the home is connected to the internet. A solution to the "last mile" problem. AT&T dropped it due to the high cost to the consumer.

I thought this was a true wireless setup like Ricochet (sp?). Where I can be driving in my car around Broadlands connected to the internet.

According to VeroLAN we are eligable for the Multi-Dwelling Services rates. So no transfer limit.

Had ricochet, it stank. I have also sampled Verizon's, Sprint's, and T-Mobiles 3G solutions. They are little slow, 100k throughput, and high latency(400 - 600ms). Still have Verizon Express Network for my PDA. I have heard about Verizon testing some new proprietary Residential Wireless Internet. However, it would be the same "Last Mile" solution that VeroLAN is offering, but with different hardware, and horrible customer service :D.

UPDATE on my VeroLAN install. I have decided to ditch Adelphia completely and go with DirecTV. I could get the same programming from DirecTV for half the price of Adelphia. VeroLAN is doing both the Internet and the DirecTV install on the same day next week and offers a nice discount on activation and hardware.

A continued very happy VeroLAN customer.

Ive got Verolan scheduled to come out on Tuesday. Im getting the 1024/512 service. Im very close to the tower so we will try and do an "in-house" install (antenna inside the home), if thats no good then we'll do an external install. Ill let you guys know how it goes and how the speeds are. From what I see Im expecting <10ms to a tier 2 backbone and a "legit" 1024/512 service - Ill try and post some results from my home. I too will be dumping "Asmelphia" if all goes well.
BTW I found out there is no SLA for residential, basically what that means is that if there is a severe outage, it could last up to a day, businesses get 2 hours, we get 1 day. Eh--- as if Adelphia would even care about one week let alone one day....:)

Wireless has been installed at the Community Center. Here are some stats:

    Ping to Yahoo.com:

    Ping statistics for 216.109.125.79:
    Packets: Sent = 10, Received = 10, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 21ms, Maximum = 25ms, Average = 22ms

Speed test at DSLR to the server in Las Angeles CA:

    2003-06-19 13:41:37 EST: 464 / 227
Your download speed : 464619 bps, or 464 kbps.
    A 56.7 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 227350 bps, or 227 kbps.

You guys have a wireless router up at the Community Center too? Can we get free limited access from the swimming pool like was originally mentioned? In that regard, is that planned for the others as well? (Nature Center, other pools...)

It's being provided to the Community Center for free by VeroLAN, it looks like they placed it at or near the 512/256 plan. I'll ask next time I talk to them.

The way it was going to work before was that you would sign up for a plan, and then use roaming abilities to surf/work while on laptops at the pool. That plan was with CWC who wanted to put in place the ability to roam. That plan didn't work out at all and CWC went under. VeroLAN is fixed-location wireless. While we do have a wireless AP set up at the community center we do not have plans on allowing free access to it. The two computers within the community center are still being worked on before we can open them up for full use to the internet. I'll bring it up at the meeting for the free access. Perhaps those that subscribe to VeroLANs wireless can be given access to the AP at the CC as well.

    S2000,
Well, its kind of strange right now. I live about .5 miles from the tower as the crow flies, I get the highest signal you can get, and one of the best signal to noise ratios. ATT, we have not been able to get the wireless to work right. It will work well when pinging at about 20ms to yahoo, but we get no bandwidth. After a few minutes we lose everything. Khalil and Jorge worked all day Tuesday and Wednesday at my home trying to resolve the problem. It just doesnt make sense what is happening. They are doing other installs today and Im not really available to work with them until next week so we have put things on hold. They have put a TON of hours in on this trying to figure out what is going on. Apparently I was their first paying residential customer so I understand running into implementation problems. I just hope they can figure it out so I can get rid of Adelphia. I suspect it may be something real simple that we are overlooking.
Funny thing is that I can ping to the WET (on top of my house), but they cant ping to the WET (from the tower) so something is not syncing up correctly between the WET and the tower. Im sure they'll figure it out.
They do offer another plan that is not listed on the website. It is the 768/386 plan for $89.99, just in case anyone is interested in that.
These guys are very nice and really want this product to work so they are putting in a lot of time to resolve the problems right now, so I wish them the best of luck, not only for me, but the others interested in the product.

BTW, I test drove an S2000. There just wasnt enough torque in it for me and I hated the LED display.....:( , so I bought a new prelude instead. Right now im looking to get the Infiniti G35 coupe....and I have test driven the manual....that is a very sweet ride. Ill be ordering that soon. Good luck on getting that s2000.....:), may get a good deal on a 2001 for about $23k or less.

Sorry to hear about the difficulties on the install. Jorge is on my roof right now trying things out, so we will see. I will give everyone an update soon.

I actually owned a 2000 S2000. Serial Number 677. Fun Car, you have to drive it like a motorcycle. But I sold it a while ago, blew out the 2nd gear syncro twice and the rear end once. Great motor, weak Tranny.

I'm getting signed up with my WET11 also. With my home-made antenna I was getting 40-45% signal, wasn't enough to work. So they are coming out tomorrow to install a better one. Even with that, I was getting some bandwidth (not a lot) and my pings were in the 120s (not good).

They got the Community Center to work great so I'm sure they will have everything ironed out very shortly.

Unfortunatly I am seeing the same problems. If all I do it ping, the link will stay up forever, but if I start browsing (e.g require bandwidth) the link dies.

I have not had a chance to sync up with VeroLAN on this issue yet. But hopefully will get some answers tomorrow. The link is definatly related to bandwidth. No surfing link stays up, surf, link dies.

    Will let you all know.

    Teak,
Yes I am a freshalloy member. I test drove at Rosenthal, but I WILL Not buy from them. I will buy from Passport or somewhere else. All but 1 of the salesmen Ive worked with were fine to work with at Rosenthal. Problem is Rosenthal has a history of poor pricing (They are talking about a $4000k premium over MSRP on the coupes for 2004- what a joke) and poor delivery/ordering. But the car was fantastic. I also drove a 6mt sedan and it was fine, but the coupe's feel was so much more superior.....
