Trash and Recycling Update for Thursday, January 28

Message From Patriot Disposal: On Thursday, January 28th, we will be attempting to provide services for our regular Thursday customers. We are asking residents to make sure that all containers are accessible, movable and free from ice and snow. The conditions of many secondary roads remain poor. If we cannot safely operate our trucks on any of these roads, services will not be provided. If services are not provided, residents should bring their items back to their home; both trash and recycling service will then resume on their next regularly scheduled collection day.

We greatly appreciate your patience and understanding during this process!

Monday Trash Service Cancelled

Due to cleanup efforts and road conditions, Patriot Disposal has announced that all trash collection services for Monday, January 25th have been cancelled. Trash service will resume on your next regularly-scheduled collection day (Thursday).  Rest assured that all accumulated materials will be collected when they return. At that time, please be sure that all containers are accessible, movable and free from ice and snow.

Broadlands contractors continue their efforts to clear roads and sidewalks.  The county has asked people to stay off the roads until at least Monday in order to allow crews to make roads as safe as possible.  The subzero temperatures expected overnight will create hazardous conditions with black ice.  Please stay safe and stay home if at all possible.

Put a Lid on It!

recylingResidents are Encouraged to Use Patriot’s Lidded Recycling Toter

Residents who currently have the smaller, open recycling bin through Patriot may swap out for the larger, covered recycling toter at NO ADDITIONAL COST.  This will help prevent trash and debris from littering our neighborhood and make it easier on Patriot to remove your recycling. The dimensions for this 64-gallon lidded toter are 31.75″ (L) x 24.25″ (W) x 41.75″ (H) compared to the smaller open bin dimensions,19″(L) x 16″(W) x 15.5″(H). Please contact Patriot Disposal at 703-257-7100 to make this request. You are encouraged to keep a record of the serial number of your toter(s) should you need to identify it in the future.

With over 1,500 spacious acres, award-winning Broadlands, a master planned community in Ashburn, Virginia, is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the natural environment while combining a modern, active lifestyle.  Broadlands is located in eastern Loudoun County, just off the Dulles Greenway at Claiborne Parkway (Exit 5), midway between Dulles International Airport and the town of Leesburg, Virginia, close to AOL’s Headquarters and other corporate centers. Broadlands planned community was created to accommodate 3,800 residences, living in harmony and balance with nature. The National Wildlife Federation has named Broadlands a Certified Wildlife Habitat Community, only the 25th community in the nation to achieve this certification.

Broadlands is developed by the Van Metre Companies, winner of the 2008 Avid Award for Best Customer Experience. Van Metre, founded in 1955, is one of the largest privately owned homebuilders and developers in the nation’s capital area. A variety of unit size and type are available to meet a range of lifestyles and budgets—a varied styles of single-family homes, town homes, condominiums, and apartments are included. Construction was recently completed, but there are always units available for sale.

The Broadlands community is managed by Broadlands Association, Inc., a homeowners association that incorporated in 1995. Broadlands became homeowner-controlled in 2009. Broadlands also includes two apartment complexes with rental units; The Arbors at Broadlands and The Van Metre Broadlands Apartments.

The entire Broadlands community is spaciously designed to flow around Stream Valley Park, 150 acres of natural haven with wooden trails, wetlands and wildlife preserves providing recreation for people of all ages. In addition, many open spaces and areas like Hillside Park and Oak Tree Grove provide perfect areas for children to play for hours.  At Broadlands, nature is not only a restorative backdrop for community activities, but is also a catalyst for bringing residents together, whether learning to build bluebird houses or participating in numerous post-certification activities protecting their Wildlife Habitat.

For a community so diverse, Broadlands is close-knit, vibrant and growing, with families placing major emphasis on schools, quality of education, and sports and activities. Boasting one of the best school districts in the metropolitan area, Loudoun County public schools offer educational programs that rank with the best in Virginia and in the nation, providing well-run programs for Gifted Students, Vocational and Alternative Education, as well as Special Education. Onsite, Broadlands has two elementary schools (Hillside and Mill Run) and one middle school (Eagle Ridge). Students grow up together and attend the same high school nearby, Briar Woods High School, with continuity of friendships that last a lifetime.

HOA Board Member, David Baroody, moved here with his wife and family in 1997. Originally, they aimed at the Fairfax area due to their reputed school system, but after being guided by their realtor to consider Loudoun County, he and his wife looked at Broadlands, and independently fell in love with the same house model and Loudoun County schools. “We were one of the first 200 homes built,” he said. “Before signing on a house, I called the local principal, as schools were a priority for us. Turns out, she was from the Fairfax district originally, and could not have been happier in Loudoun. Her view of the superior quality of education programs available to our kids in Loudoun was accurate; she never let us down. Our kids got an outstanding education here, plus they’ve made life-long friends from early grade school on.”

Broadlands residents recognize they live in a premier part of northern Virginia and take pride in their community through an active homeowners association, a wide array of natural and man-made amenities, and special events throughout the year, such as the Broadlands Live Concert Series.  Reasonable HOA dues pay for upkeep of community common areas, playgrounds, nature trails, along with amenities such as three community swimming pools, nine tennis courts, and 23 tot lots. Over 3 million square feet of shopping, restaurants, services, and offices are nearby at Broadlands Village Center and Broadlands Market Place.

Balancing the mix of streetscapes and neighborhoods with the sanctuary of nature seems to create a balance of life at Broadlands that is hard to beat. In the midst of modern living, this community has created a neighborhood based on older values. When you have a wildlife preserve running through the heart of the community that you care for, the land takes care of you.  For active 21st-century lifestyles, Broadlands is a natural way to live.

Wetlands:

The community has several areas that are designated as wetlands. Wetlands are the link between the land and the water. They are transition zones where the flow of water, the cycling of nutrients, and the energy of the sun meet to produce a unique ecosystem characterized by hydrology, soils, and vegetation, making these areas very important features of a watershed. Learn more about wetlands from the US Army Corps of Engineers’ publication Recognizing Wetlands and the EPA flyer Wetland Overview.
