I need help from the veteran residents of Broadlands (or maybe from someone with a bit more ingenuity than me)....

AFTER my trash gets collected, the can sits all day (both my wife and I work). I'm in a Townhouse, so I just bought a light-weight can from Walmart. This past Tuesday, I found it at the end of my cul-de-sac, about 150 yards or so down the street. Glad it didn't damage any cars, houses, etc...

Any thoughts on how to secure my trash can when it's empty and I can't do anything about it until the evening?

I tought about putting a rock in it, but I'm afraid they'll just throw it away. I could put a "leash" on it, but then I'd hate for someone to trip on it (sounds silly, but it's a workable solution). Or, do I just resign myself to the fact that it will blow away and I have to chase it? Thanks!!

dcdavis I too live in the town homes and yes for the most part we just have to go looking for our trash cans. fortunatly for many of us on this street there are several stay at home moms and many of them will get neighbors trash cans and at least place them closer to the homes. Most of the times if they are placed in the garage arch they stay put for the remainder of the day. So my best advice is see if you have a neighbor who is willing to grab yours for you especially on windy days and put it by your home.

Print your house # neatly on your can. Use a black marker.
Then atleast if it travels far, someone will know where it came from.

Shoot ... last Wednesday, after the recycling was pickedup, I had three bins in my yard, and two were in my neighbors! All due to the wind, and none of them, NONE were mine, as I didn't put out any recycling that day.

I picked them all up, and put them in the street .. they were gone by the next day ... not sure if they were picked up, or just blew on down the street.[:p]

Or you can grab it and put it back before you head for work if you live in Southern Walk ... Beauty of AAA coming so early in the morning !!

I agree about AAA coming early to Souther Walk. It usually works out.

Except that they must have been scared of the sleet/snow on Tuesday, because they still hadn't come by 2pm (I came home over lunch). When I got back from work at 7, the trash was empty and the wind had kicked up considerably.

Forget the wind, ours just disappeared today! We didn't even put it out for pick up and it is gone. I am on the phone with AAA right now trying to figure out what they know... I can't imagine that anyone would take it from the driveway (by the garage door). We live in the TH also & there aren't any trash cans on the street. Normally, there are some ppl. that have pick up on Friday. I think someone took a lot of them. Since, I have talked with AAA & it wasn't them.

FWIW ... trash cans as well as recycle bins must be kept out of sight, not in front of your house/townhouse.

However, the HOA would not have picked them up, just would have left a notice.

AAA took my lid once and then returned it on the next trash day.

Yesterday I found my lid about a block away all dented up with a tire tread through it... I don't know, but I'm pretty sure a lid is small swerve around. If not, I guess it's asking too much to get out of the car and at least kick it out of the way. Then again, that's probably too much effort [}:)] Is it lack of courtesy or just plain laziness?

My understanding (at least in the TH section) is that you are allowed to put out your trash in "secured bags"- they don't have to be in a can. It looks bad, but I think it's permitted.

There are a TON of boxes on our street today, but I'm sympathetic- most people are still moving in. At least the wind wasn't blowing last night or today.

I don't believe bags are authorized for trash in any area, except as overflow when necessary. The covenants refer to "trash containers, or trash removal system". I guess you could argue that a trash bag is a 'trash removal system', but the problem with bags is that animals can (and often do) smell kitchen scraps in bags, and tear up the bags leaving trash everywhere.

Townhouse owners could get the same type of container as the single family homes (with an increase in HOA fees), but then you run into the problem of where to put the container. What is usually recommended is the purchase of a standard plastic trash can from a home center, that could fit in the garage out of sight.

Just to clear up any confusion... In our TH section everyone's trash can got stolen a few weeks ago (see earlier posting). AAA is replacing them within the next 2 weeks.

AAA is replacing them ?? TH's do not get trash recepticles from AAA, so why is AAA replacing them ??

Please check with Wes on this, as this does not sound right.
