When I was in Ashburn earlier today--I saw where the Exxon gas station at Waxpool and Farmwell Hunt Plaza was $2.79/gallon for Regular Unleaded. Exxon station is where the Bloom/Food Lion grocery store is located. Filled up and thought I would post info.

    That was about noon today.

In perspective, given inflation and cost of other product, $3 per gallon is still pretty cheap. Consider that we routinely pay $1.50 for a 16 oz. bottle of water or soda, and almost $3.00 for a soda at a restaurant. How much do we pay for a 16 oz. beer?!

A 28 oz. bottle of Pine-Sol is $2.78. A bottle of Windex is over $4.00. So $3.00 for an entire gallon of gas doesn't seem so bad.

Yes, but such comparisons do not count consumption rates or total expenditure.

Count up how much you spend on Windex a year vs Gas.

The economies of scale are in the favor of gas obviously - but the important part is your expense, not the per unit cost.

it's different because we don't HAVE to have 16 portions of beer, or soda per week. the brave can drink tap water so that's not a necessity either. gas IS a neceesary evil- even if you telecommute. i can't stand bloated prices on items i have to have to live my regular daily life. the gas hasn't gotten better- they aren't running OUT of resources, so why should the price have more than doubled in the past 5 years? besidesobvious political reasons.

agree re consumption analogies, but still think the price isn't as bad as we think. we could have greater supplies of gas here to lower prices, but some do not want to allow us to drill for more.

consumption has drastically increased, redon. we have had a booming economy for years, plus countries like china and india are increasing demand.

actually, let me revisit this. in the absolute sense, the comparison to other products on a per gallon basis still holds weight. given how much work is required to get gasoline to the pumps, the price is relatively reasonable compared to other products.

especially when you consider that 50 cents on each gallon actually goes to federal and state taxes.

we have options to keep our gas prices down. we can buy a hybrid, use mass transit, get a job closer to home, etc.

Yes, but there is also economies of scale. They don't pay a trucker to move 1 gallon of gas.. they pay a trucker to move 5,000 at once.

If anything, the price of gas just goes to show you how economies of scale can drive what should be incredible prices through the floor. Considering oil is insanely expensive to scout, discover, retrieve and process... let alone the entire distribution network required to move it between the stages of retrieval, refinement, distribution, and POS.

The real significance of gas prices (IMO) is the overhead it causes in the rest of the economy. EVERYTHING is moved by truck... you drive up trucking costs, you drive up cost of nearly all goods.

Good point, Steve. It is amazing how cheap it really is given the inherent upfront costs. Your final point is dead on--that's why I am surprised that with higher gas prices the last couple years, it didn't cause more of a drag on the economy or greater inflation.

Gas just dropped under $3.00/gal out here in the Burbank, CA area. I know y'all don't care too much, but gas has been normally about $.40-.60 more a gallon.
