Academy of Science - T.J. Science and Tech

On January 9th, LCPS School Board member Eric Hornberger posted information on his Facebook page about the Jan 8 school board meeting. Part of the discussion (and comments) on fb were in regard to the expansion of the Academy of Science (AoS). Mr. Hornberger would like to see the AoS facility expanded.

Currently, many Loudoun students attend Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County. An expansion of the Academy of Science would enable more students to attend school closer to home.

Additionally, Fairfax is planning renovations for T.J., and proposing that other school districts should pay toward the cost of renovation of T.J. based on how many students from that district are enrolled at TJ. This means that Loudoun would pay approximately $7.8 million toward TJ's renovation. Mr. Hornberger sees this as an important factor in deciding plans for the expansion of LCPS's Academy of Science.

TJ needs the work. My son graduated from TJ 10 years ago and it was in need of renovations then. It was a great opportunity for him. But, there are students who turned down TJ due to the distance of the commute and the impact on their social life.
