Loudoun County’s Office of Solid Waste Management will host April’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day Event from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at Loudoun Valley High School, 340 North Maple Avenue in Purcellville.

Household hazardous waste that will be accepted are oil-based paints, paint thinners and solvents, corrosives, insecticides, unwanted fuels, photographic chemicals, oxidizers, and household batteries. Fluorescent bulbs are accepted. Remember to transport your HHW safely in clearly labeled, leak-proof, airtight containers.

“The county has hired contractors to properly handle the waste.
County residents don’t even have to get out of their cars,” said Kate Glass, recycling coordinator for the Office of Solid Waste Management. “We want citizens to feel that protecting the environment can be safe, easy, and convenient.”

Motor oil, antifreeze, car batteries or other lead-acid batteries, and propane tanks are not accepted as HHW; they can be delivered to the Loudoun County Solid Waste Management Facility on Evergreen Mills Road for recycling. For a complete list of acceptable and unacceptable items, please visit the Office of Solid Waste Management website at www.loudoun.gov/hhw . More information is also available by calling the Loudoun County Recycling Hotline at 703-771-5318.
