Grocery Store Tests Prototype in Ashburn

Giant Food's sixth Super Giant prototype will open in Ashburn Oct. 20. The Landover, MD-based grocer first rolled out the Super Giant format in Delaware this April in response to consumer demand, spokesman Jamie Miller said.

A lot of consumers are starved for time, he said. Super Giants aim to create a one-stop shopping environment by also carrying more general merchandise such as party goods, home goods, videos, movies and games. The Super Giant enables consumers to do the majority of their shopping in one location, he said.

The 65,420 square foot store will also have larger food and pharmacy departments than the eight smaller Giants in Loudoun. Miler declined to say if smaller Giants will be turned into Super Giants "for competitive reasons" but did say some of its stores will be upgraded.

Other features of the Super Giant include a cheese shop and sushi bar. The new store will employ about 150 people.

During the grand opening, proceeds from a hot dog and soda sidewalk sale will be donated to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, an emergency food assistance nonprofit in Leesburg.
