    Hi,

    I'm thinking of getting an attic fan installed. Does it really make a big difference in the temperature of the house. I have a two story family room and on hot days like today, the room is just not cooling down.

    Would you recommend an attic fan? What are e negatives of having one installed. I heard birds can get stuck in there. Also, having a hole cut through my roof makes me nervous as well. Can you recommend a company to do this work?

    Thanks.

    We had one installed a few years ago and definitely see a difference in the efficiency of the attic heat pump and overall cooling. It's also notably cooler in the attic, than it was prior to installing it.

    At closing I asked a ton of questions pertaining to different aspects of the house we where buying, I took about a good hour with my questions. The wife asked one.... is there an attic fan installed :)
    Having a attic fan reduces the cooling cost in the summer and also removes any toxins that might accumulate in your attic. If you don't have one yet I would recommend;

    1. Figure out your square footage of your attic.
    2. Buy a roof fan that will handle your size of attic.
    3. It should only run you about a $100 to have it in stalled.

    I wouldn't recommend a solar panel attic fan because it will die when clouds pass over even if it extremely hot outside and they only push about 800 cfm.

    If you currently have gable vents in your attic it's my understanding that you do not need to cut a hole in your roof. In that case it's just a matter of installing the fan correctly to utilize the existing attic gable vents. I could be wrong but that's what I was told by an A/C installer.
