We have a walk up basement. The other day we very nearly got water in the basement, when one or two errant leaves stopped up the drain cover at the bottom of the stairs.

I bought one of these at the hardware store in the gutter department, cut off 1" from the bottom and bent the bottom edge. This allowed it to be screwed down using the existing screw holes, although I had to use a slightly longer screw.

Hopefully this will prevent this from being a problem, bus has not been tested over time yet.

Has anyone else successfully dealt with this issue?

    Mike

I thought about the cover you've shown (and actually bought one a while back) but did not want any leaves or particles getting in the drain and the sump.

This solution appears to have worked pretty well over the last few days.

Those are usually used in a setup where water is coming 'out', such as when you have your downspouts go underground and come out somewhere else. The pressure of the outflow pushes the top open and water flows out, until the flow isn't strong enough anymore and the top shuts.

In the setup described in this thread, water needs to go 'into' the drain, not flow out of it.

Yea those Pop-ups work really well in the yard... I buried all my downspouts and ran corrugated pipe with those pop-ups at the end, in the grass. It does a great job of helping to irrigate the grass.
