There is a beginner chess program being offered for August 6th, 8th and 10th from 9:30-11:30 at the Broadlands Community Center on Waxpool Road. This applies to elementary aged students from grades 1-6. This is a beginner course where your child will learn the names of the chess pieces, how they move and how to play the game by week's end.

This course will be taught by a passionate chess teacher, Erin Peavornick who has a master's degree in education and has taught chess for over 10 years to students, teachers and parents of all ages. She also holds chess tournaments throughout the year for experienced grade school aged chess players so we hope to offer an advanced class at the Community Center next year. Chess Federation Boards will be used and the class size will be small.

The cost is $85.00 for Broadlands residents and $95.00 for non-residents. Please email me if you are interested in registering. I am the coordinator for Erin and will be happy to answer any questions for you and/or send you the chess brochure. Thanks.

I played a lot of chess in my high school and college days.

I was, not to brag, but pretty darn good.:)

Anyway perhaps they could open this up to the older kids or do a separate thing, it was really good for me, then again I mostly won:) sometimes in three moves. The better one is when I gave my opponent 3 pieces and I had only the King and said he could never checkmate me . Of course you had to set a time limit or it would go on forever.

Real chess people would know what I am talking about;)
