    Broadlands Cares
Broadlands Cares is a Community Service Organization created to support charitable organizations in Loudoun County. It was inspired by Barack Obama’s message of change, hope, and service to our country. It is a non-partisan, non-denominational group of neighbors working together to help those in need.

The goal for Broadlands Cares is not to just do one thing, it is to determine needs in the community and try to meet these needs. Some of those are/may be:

    · Homeless Shelters:
    · Coat drives in the winter for GSA and LAWS
    · Clothing drives year round for the shelters
    · Food drives for GSA and LAWS all year round
    · Bake Sales for GSA and LAWS
    · Garage Sales for GSA and LAWS
    · Literacy:
    · Volunteer to read to children on Thursday nights at the homeless shelter for the Loudoun Literacy Council
    · Volunteer to be a Tudor for the Loudoun Literacy Council
    · Job Hunting:
    · Support for women at LAWS with resume writing
    · Mentor women at LAWS with interview skills
    · Clothing drives for professional clothing
    · Animals:
    · Volunteer for Animal Rescues
    · Pet supplies drive
    · Schools:
    · Adopt school children at the beginning of the school year
    · Big brother/big sister program
    · Holidays:
    · Adopt a family for holidays
    · Send cards to troops for holidays

The Broadlands Nature Center has offered the use of the Nature Center for collection bins for any type of collections. This is our initial list, so there is much to do and we need a lot of help.

FYI: 14th Annual Run for the Shelter 5k and Half-Marathon to Benefit LAWS in April

There is a race coming up on April 19th benefiting the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter. It is a half-marathon and 5K, also a Kids Fun Run, too. Go to www.runfortheshelter.org to find out more. (We have a group of friends from Broadlands (and other friends, too) that are planning on running/walking the 5k.

It would be fun to get a group of your friends together and do it for fun and a good cause!

If I can walk it, I would absolutely be there. I am not a runner ... too old and too ... well ... well rounded ... but I can walk 5K. I think that will b e on my list. So now I need a volunteer to organize this for us. :)

I will post once I confirm you can walk it. I can't imagine they wouldn't let people walk. I'm sure there are many of us who can't run (myself included) that still want to participate.

There is even a place in Ashburn to pick up the race packets once you register, so you don't have to stand in line the day of the event. All this info is posted on the website for the race.

FYI: 5k race benefiting LAWS is walkable

    FYI:

The 5k race on April 19th benefiting the Loudoun Abused Women's Shelter is walkable. I spoke to someone on the race committee, and he said as long as you can finish in about an hour (doable considering it is just over 3 miles), it would definitely be OK.

We have a growing group of women walking together. Hope to see you there! (We might even do t-shirts or something since it looks like we're going to have a good turnout.) In addition, I was also thinking of asking if participants in our group would like to donate a gift card to Wal Mart, Target or Kohls or gas cards that we could hand over to LAWS. I know they are always in need of these for shelter guests.

Just some ideas in the event anyone else is forming a group and wants to walk.

I will definitely be there and walk with you if I may. :)

I would like to get together on February 17 (a Tuesday evening) for a planning session for the next project and also for the group overall. I have gotten a bunch of emails and phone messages, and will contact those people individually, but if you read this post, would you let me know if that evening would work for you? We could pick a quiet restaurant (not too pricey) where we could have dinner and then do some planning work

Marianne - I hope you will consdier making Loudoun Interfaith Relief the beneficiary of your food drives. Disclaimer: I'm on the board of directors. LIR is the largest food pantry in the county and you would not believe the number of people we are serving - almost 4,300 Loudoun County residents in December alone.

    Lisa,

absolutely. I am still researching the charitable organizations in the county and trying to come up with "the plan". Since right now I am home after a surgery, I am hoping that I can get together with some of the people running the charities and get some detail on the needs of the specific charity so we can do some focused work. Well, once I recover a little or I get in trouble here at home. :)
