I am wondering if I should bring my 19 month old to the Annual Easter Egg Hunt next week (Sat at 1100 at Hillside Park). Is there a separate event for different ages? Will she get overwhelmed anyway? What do you think?

This is for all ages. I have asked for several years that a separate area be sectioned off fo the little ones in out community, and the events committee refuses! We haven't gone to any of them because of this. We have just done egg hunts with our neighbors. If it rains and the bunny is just hanging out handing out eggs, it is probably OK for your little one (other than the long wait in line).

What would you suggest they provide for children under 2 years of age anyway?

I don't think there is anything different about it, it's more just separating it so that the youngest ones are able to get eggs, too. That way the older kids don't get them all before the little ones have a chance.

A separate area for the toddlers, so that they are able to get eggs and are not run over by the bigger kids.

Good point. But do they limit participation by age? And, partitioning an area off for toddlers doesn't seem like a big deal. I thought you wanted activities very age specific and that was why the events committee would not oblige.

Thanks for the info. I think we'll probably stay home. FWIW, I think Heritage High School had a egg hunt today (for a fee), in which they separated the kids by age (under 3 was one of the three groups), so maybe we'll do that next year if they do it again.

I went to an egg hunt this past weekend at en elementary school in Haymarket and they roped off sections per age. The parents were right next to the little ones, collecting their OWN bags of eggs, and by the time somekids were able to push through, the eggs were gone- and there were thousands of eggs out there.
The best egg hunt I have seen is the one they do at Claude Moore Park in Sterling. They do it by TIME. And the parents (for the most part) stay behind the rope. So the littlest ones go at 10:15, then the 3-5 at 10:45, the 6 year olds at 11:15, and the older kids at 11:45. It is really a great way to do it. They just keep adding eggs. I think that one is this coming weekend, check the paper, b/c they might require registration.
FWIW, I love the Broadlands hunt and if your little one is truly little, just come out and make sure they get 1 or 2. That's all a little kid cares about anyway. It's a really nice way for us to see all of our neighbors.

Not really, the little ones care more about getting the eggs (gathering) than having them. Ours have forgotten about having candy/stuff in the eggs even just hours after the hunt. They even rehide the eggs in the house to play the hunt again (and again and again).

Its the little ones (4 and under) thats the problem with the Broadlands egg hunt. If your kid falls in this range, be sure to have a separate egg hunt because there is a very big chance they won't get much of anything. I like how it sounds that Claude Moore Park does. Can't really fault the events committee however, they are really short on members from what I understand.

We did our hunt (other than the numerous ones at home) at Sully Plantation. To make sure everyone got eggs, they limited the kids to 6 eggs each and had plenty for everyone since they took reservations.

Great Country Farm has timed hunts for specific age groups and they limit the number of eggs for each kid (6). HOWEVER, kids don't adhere to the rules and parents don't enforce them so kids were walking out of the hunts with tons of eggs in their baskets. My 3 boys found NONE. Had T8tot not shared his eggs (which T8girl made sure he picked up the max number of eggs allowed), my boys would have gone home with an empty basket.

I guess the point of my post is for parents to make sure their kids adhere to the rules so other kids don't miss out on the fun.

my friend held an egg hunt outside of the nature center one day last year (or the year before??) and she just went up to the nature center in the morning, on a saturday when no one was there, and hid a bunch of eggs. she invited a few neighbors, the kids hunted for truly hidden eggs, and we went home:)
    it was really fun!

Mad props to the Events Committee for an awesome egg hunt. My 4 & 6 year olds got lots of eggs and took a picture with the bunny- even in the weather! Thanks for a fun event!!!!

Welp. I attended this little shindig and I must say it reminded me of a scene out of 300.

Mine were little egg hunters for the day. Were you expecting anything less ;) ? I thought it went well. But the weather was kind of yucky.

I bet the events committee needs volunteers. I always see the same very few people helping at all of the events.
Volunteering on the events committee can be easy and fun and you can get your kids, no matter how small, involved.

BTW, I am always surprised at how many people attend the community events and how little thank yous are issued to the volunteers that coordinate them.
I am not ON the events committee, but I think they do a great job.
That Easter Bunny sat on a wet bench in hail and posed for pictures with any child who wanted to. That's dedication.

What was the problem with the weather yesterday? When we had a neighborhood egg hung yesterday at 1:30pm it was great outside. For our egg hunt, which included about 30 kids, the younger ones got about a 3 minute head start before the older kids were "released." It seemed to work out well and was a lot of fun for the kids. Even more fun for the dads, who stood out front and drank beer. :p

Ohhhhhh! I just noticed that you mentioned hail so now I realize that your hunt must have been on Saturday! That hail was completely random, wasn't it? Weird.

It was our first Broadlands egg hunt so we were unaware of how it would work. Now we know. Next year we will be better prepared. Prepared for glory!

We are very thankful for the event and wish to express our gratitude to the event planners. Especially to the poor Easter Bunny who sat patiently in the wintry mix.

I second the great job the committee did on the egg hunt.

Does the committee want the plastic eggs returned?
