I recently purchased a mini chandelier for the bathroom for above the tub. There is an existing light fixture there, looks like a glass twist off cover to get the bulb, kind of looks like a recessed can when u open it up..but i dont know if it is since the light wasnt flush.

My question is , what do u attach the chandelier to? And does anybody know if ur allowed to put a chandelier above the tub. Any rules or codes?

FWIW ... anything that is electrical should not be hanging over a bathtub. Someone could start slipping in the bath, grab onto it, and fry themselves.

Chances are th eold light was a recessed lite. Specificallly one with a cover to be installed above a tub/shower. The cover is there to satisfy the building code.

Recessed lights are simply clamed to the drywall ceiling. There is no junction box to which you can attach any other type of light fixture.

Finally, Neil is correct about the electrical issues. This would be a violation of building code and plain safety.

If the light gets wet and causes a fire, your insurance will NOT cover it.

If someone gets shocked/hurt while using the tub with that light installed, you can be sued.

My recommendation, don't install the light above the tub. If you really want it in the bathroom, have another junctiom box installed somewhere else in the ceiling away from the tub.
