Does anyone know somewhere locally (Besides the "Food Lion") where I might be able to purchase a Christmas Tree? Also any info on prices? Thanks

http://www.loudounfarms.org/Default.asp?Page=137 lists all the "cut your own" farms in Loudoun and lists price info for each, also what types of trees, etc. download the pdf brochure, it includes a map. I got mine at Snickers Gap lasy year and will go back there this year. I've been less happy with some of the others because I like Scotch pine and not all have shakers to get rid of the excess (dead) needles (fire starter).

Our favorite place is Day Star Farm which is a cut-your-own tree farm off of Reservoir Rd, which is off of Evergreen Mill.
It's a family farm and the trees are reasonably priced. They also have a "hidden" candy cane tree that the kids love to go find to get their candy cane. They also have free pony rides and hot chocolate.
It's also owned and operated by a great family.

We go to Melody Farm on Gum Spring. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the hayrides and cider, etc, but the Clarks were awarded the medal last year for the best Scotch pine in the state by the VA Christmas Tree Growers' Association. It is a family farm, and the shed where they wrap and load also has handcrafted ornaments, wreaths etc. (We go for two reasons: the Clarks are friends, and I'm not keen on driving the extra miles from Bluemont (or farther) with a tree on the roof of my trusty 11-yr old Toyota wagon, in deer season) All the trees we have had from them last and last. Either last year or year before we brought one home festooned with spent cocoons on the inner branches--extra natural decoration!

Just went to Ticonderoga Farms which is off Braddock road (off Gum Springs across 50). While it's a nice tree, I think it was quite overpriced. They are both a pre-cut and cut your own tree place.

Snickers Gap hasn't been replanting the scotch pine. We had to get a douglas fir. Nice tree though. they also have colorado blue spruce. $45 for anything under 7 feet. ($35 for white or scotch pine, except they have very few and they're ugly)

The Ashburn Fire Dept. had really nice trees last year. The prices were competitive or a little better than other places. I think we paid $70+ for a 9 ft. blue spruce.

They had Fraser Firs in the Broadlands Safeway parking lot last year.

Forgot to say that Melody is $30 (or has been every time we've been).

Thanks Dutchml. I should have clarified - does anyone know about any places that you can cut your own Fraser Fir?

We got ours from the Christmas Tree Place (no kidding - that's what it's called!) last year. They are in Purcellville, behind Fields of Flowers (which has awesome holiday decorations, BTW). They had a nice selection. Unfortunately the one we chose (I think it was a Scotch Pine) lost too many needles. The place is great tho. Good people, good hot chocolate, and they let me take their ATV our for a run :) Plus you can take your pets with you.

You know, you can go to a cut your own place, like the Snicker Gap Tree Farm and get the same tree (or larger) for $59.00.

From a look on the page refereneced above, most have 'pre-cut' Fraziers, there are two places that say they have Fraziers, Oaksworth Tree Farm off RT 15 and Ticonderoga Farms off Gum Springs south of Rt 50.

My family has been going to a place off Route 15 on the other side of Lucketts for the past couple of years. We always cut our own Frasier Firs, and we have had very good luck there. Their prices are much better than shopping for a tree in a parking lot. We have taken advantage of their clearance trees ($25 or so) that might have a little more "character" (not 100% perfect), but they still look great.

I can't remember the name of the place now, but I believe it is included on the Loudoun County website listed earlier in this forum. Take 15 out past the Outlet Mall for several miles, and the place is on the right, just before a sweeping curve to the left with a gas station on the curve. (If I remember the name, I will post it back here...sorry.)

We went to Snickers Gap and were disappointed. We went on a week night right after school. There were no hay rides and the hot cider was all gone. We did manage to find a decent tree of about 7.5 feet, but it was the tallest one we could find and there weren't many big ones. Types were also limited (no Scotch this year).

We will try somewhere else next year.

Thought I'd post about Ticonderoga Farms ...

We finally went to get our tree yesterday (slackers that we are...). We went to Ticonderoga Farms. Apparently the folks that own the place provide housing for some of their workers, and one the houses burned down on Fri. night. Most of these guys are from Mexico, and were getting ready to go visit their families. Unfortunately all of their personal items burned - so any cash they had, their passports, clothing, etc. So, if you have any clothes/blankets/coats, etc. to spare - you may want to give them a call and see if they are still looking for donations. I was impressed that Salvation Army was there by 8:30 on Sat. morning with an offer to help. Just thought I'd pass this along, since several folks posted about them this year.

Some notes for next year's Tree Shoppers:

I have to put my vote in for Snickers Gap. We counted the number of "squares" of trees they have, each 60 trees per side...well, in short, they have close to 100K trees growing out there.

Granted, no Frasier Firs, and limited on Scotch. But if you want Doug Fir, Blue Spruce, White Pine or several others, they have a LOT to choose from. We went rather late - Dec 18 - and got a very nice blue spruce for $45...and a ride down the hill to our car, and hot cider. Actually, they've got a pretty smart setup.

Also, unlike several other places, they seem to be consciencious about replanting each year. There were no "last season" holes in the fields. That means they'll have consistent trees, year to year - weather permitting.

Past years we've gone to Ticonderoga Farms - usually for a Frasier Fir, but they're not grown on the farm (I don't think). Seems the FFirs are always precut and brought in. But the Snickers Gap folks seemed much more organized - once we cut it down, it was barely 10 minutes from the when they dragged it up the hill; put it on the shaker; tied it up; tagged with our name; and loaded on the tractor for drive down to parking lot. (During which I paid and met up with tree in trailer).

Whoever mentioned the place north of Lucketts (sic), it's Jacobson's Farm. When we went, they were closed, despite having a lot of decent trees still in the field. I guess they sell only a quota each year to avoid overselling/stripping the field. So go early in the season to shop there.

Now...almost time to drag it back out of the house....

I'd like to ask everyone how long their live tree lasted? When did you buy? Is it still going strong? Dead already?

Our beautiful expensive tree went into fire mode the week before Christmas (yes, we watered it daily; and used the "prolong" solutions). Finally bought my artificial tree that I don't have to worry about:)

Ours is still going strong. We got a very nice Scotch pine at Daystar Farm, on the recommendation of this thread. We got it the Saturday after Thanksgiving (a week before they opened, but the owner was very nice and welcomed us to go ahead and cut a tree, and come back later for a pony ride!). He told us the Scotch pines tend to last longer than others, and I would definitely get one again.
