    Hello

Wondering if anyone knows what this is? A standard cocoon or some sort of worm/pest problem we should remove? We have just 1 in our tree.

    Thank you.

Appears to be tent worms. You should try to remove and destroy it.

If left to hatch, those worms will travel throughout your tree and eat away at all the leaves, causing serious harm to the tree...

I would attempt to carefully remove as much of it as possible, put it in a bucket of soapy water (dishwashing detergent) for an hour or so, and dispose of it properly, away from other trees. In some cases, I have actually cut the affected branch entirely if it's not a main feeder, doesn't affect the look/health of the tree, etc.

You could also talk to a nursery and see if they have a pesticide you can use on it if it's too difficult to manually remove.

Thank you for the advice. It is on a small branch that we should be able to easily remove. Will give this a try. Thanks again.

YES REMOVE - and quickly. They are very destructive and just dump them in a bucket of soapy water.... and pick them right off the tree with a glove and get as many as possible.

And as you can see from the picture, they are more likely to be in the Cherry Trees

The eastern tent caterpillar is an early season defoliator of deciduous trees. ... The eastern tent caterpillar's favorite hosts are wild cherry, apple and crabapple...ash, birch, blackgum, redgum, willow, witch-hazel, maple, oak, poplar, cherry, peach and plum. The mature caterpillars are hairy and black in color with a white stripe down the back and a series of blue spots and yellow stripes to the sides.
