So, we had our house number painted on our curb in response to a solicitation placed on our door. It looks like they did a good job. However, now I'm getting worried about leaving a $15.00 check out there addressed to "A.N. Amaya" (as requested on the notice) when the company is referred to as "Community Address Painting Service" and there is no company address or phone number listed. (What will they do with our checking account number?) We don't want to leave cash out there either. Getting a money order is inconvenient. We want to pay them for the job they did, but aren't sure how to go about it.

Now we are wondering whether the numbers are even allowed or recommended. I just searched for the company and found the Washington Post article below, which was dated a little over a year ago. What did everyone else do in response to the solicitation? Any suggestions on what to do next?

Manassas officials are warning residents of a curb-painting scam that has occurred in the area. According to the city, a company called Community Address Painting Service has distributed fliers soliciting residents to get their house numbers painted on their curbs. The fliers make it sound as though the city is requesting the painting, which is not the case.
Curbs and gutters are city property, and Manassas officials do not support painting house numbers on them, according to city documents. No address or phone number is listed on the fliers. In similar scams, however, residents are often asked to make checks out to "CAS" -- which represents curb address service -- and the solicitor then adds an "H," cashes the check and doesn't return to do the job. Anyone who has been victimized by the scam or might have information about those behind it is asked to call Manassas police at 703-257-8000.

Since they painted your curb, then you didn't get scammed.

We had ours painted a few years ago-forgot the company name but it was more like a guy with some spray paint. I actually wish he'd come back through. I like the visibility and it could use to be touched up. While it's not a requirement, I think having your # on your curb makes it easier for emergency and delivery personnel. If you really are concerned, I would roll the dice and leave cash.

Leave a check for them. There's a family around here that paints the mailbox flags and I left a check for them in an envelope on my front door.
