What's really funny is that here in the Pittsburgh area, if there's roadkill in the road when they're painting lines, they'll turn off the spray just before and restart after.

So later when the roadkill has either been scraped up, or decomposed to nothing, you'll have a white line along the side of the road ... a blank area .. then the line.

NaturaLawn just did aeration and seeding for you? Were they expensive?

I'm doing my own today...renting the core aerator from a local equipment rental place. Put on some gator blades and you won't need to worry about dethaching.

They fertilized at the same time. But they might just do the aeration. It wasn't cheap - $300 for the aeration and seeding. But I am not sure what others charge.

Thanks Pam.....you're right - they're not cheap.....compared to renting one yourself and sharing with the neighbors...

If you're willing to do the work yourself, and have a vehicle to get the equipment, it is definitely worth doing yourself. Had I rememered how much they charge, I might have looked at my options. Doh! But I'm not sure that I would want to deal with renting what I assume is a relatively heavy piece of machinery.

I rented this one for $40/day.

I'm taking a break from it currently...I'm about half through .58 acre in about 35min and this machine is kicking my *** all over they yard. It's self propelled (kinda) but it's a lot of work...especially if you try to turn it w/o lifiting the tines. :)

Myself and a few neighbors had our lawns aerated this week by American Roots (contact is Jimmy Rose). We thought he did a great job and prices were quite reasonable (may have been a bit lower since we did a group job, but not sure). Number is 703-430-1149.

as a data point, I rented an aerator from Ashburn Rentals for $45 for 1/2 day. They are even open on Sundays (and wiling to stay late if you need more time, I highly recommend them). If you have a minivan or SUV, no problem transporting it.
