I thought I had installed a bird feeder in the back of my yard. Turns out as of yesterday, it is a deer feeder. Not sure what I can do except take it down if the deer show too much dedication to birdseed.

AAAAAwwwwwwwww... the deer are losing their habitat quickly. Why not feed those poor things, too?

Somehow I doubt this bird was after the birdseed in my feeder.

You are correct! He was after the baby birds in a nest on the side of my house where the Oleander bushes are. We were surprised to see him sitting on the side fence the other night and noticed two sparrows darting into the bushes. There was a lot of commotion and in the end we think he got one. Yesterday when I checked there was no sign of any birds in a nest. Very sad! It seems like they must be losing their fields in which to catch mice, because I've never seen a hawk in and around the neighborhoods.

never seen a hawk around the neighborhoods? They thrive in this environment. Hawks (like many other species) have figured out how to take advantage of the changes around them, and as soon as we come along and clear-out the area and put in homes... they actually have new places to roost and hunt. And since the rabbits have new places to run, the hawks follow.

Hawks love the city too, all those high building make for great nesting grounds and the pigeons are an endless food supply.

Yes, I've seen hawks. Just not on my back fence. I thought it was a neat picture.

Actually, it looks like a Juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. Look closely to the tail, it has bands. A Red-tailed Hawk has a red tail, no bands. The definate way to tell is by their call....they both have very distinct calls.
    Just my two cents.;)

What an incredible picture, and an incredible animal. There used to be a red-tail that was always on Waxpool Rd. It always hung out on the tree line, or power lines where the hotel, five guys, et al retail center now is. I always slowed down to admire him/her,
