Never say never. Would my kids do this? I could only hope not, but you never know. They aren't allowed out roaming the streets after dark, so if they did it they would have to do it during the day. I only wish that my kids were so perfect to be able to proclaim that they "would never do such a thing" You have truely been blessed.

And I love the new twist on parenting. If your kid does something wrong you lecture your child's friends for somehow causing the behavior. Last week my son got a lecture from another mom because he laughed at her son's joke about burping. She explained to me that she didn't want her 6 year old talking about such a crass subject. She never said a thing to her angel, she just lectured my kid.

Parents need to do occasional denial checks. If you're blaming your child's friends for your child's behavior, you, the parent have some issues.

OH please ... that mom should let the six year old be a six year old. Kids laugh at burping and other bodily noises, you can let them know its not for 'polite' company when they reach 9 or 10.

    Sheesh !!

I used to be able to belch the entire alphabet. It was quite a talent.

The kids just need good coaching.

There's another new twist too. My daughter was out at Trailside Park and climbed up the ladder for one of the play structures and then would not allow other kids to come up the ladder. I instructed her that she needed to let the other kids up and she had to come down to talk to me about it. She was compliant and came down and we talked about what she did that was wrong and why it was wrong and what she could have done differently and how she'll handle it in the future. The instructional lesson lasted three times as long as the incident itself (which was less than a minute in duration).

    Situation under control, right?

One of the other little girls at the park who we'd never seen before comes over and starts telling my kid what a horrible person she is and yelling at me about how I ought to spank her and how she needs to be banned from the park forever. This kid was maybe 6 or 7.

Now, I'm not saying my kid was right because she wasn't but I had the situation under control and was handling it. The other kid's mom just sat there and watched the entire thing.

the lack of respect shown by a SIX YEAR OLD to an adult is the big issue- UNREAL! if i EVER saw my kid talking to an adult in that fashion I would swiftly remind him of his place in the world as a CHILD, make him apologize to the adult, and apologize MYSELF on behalf of my kid.

who says children should be able to "express themselves freely" at that age? if that's the case, the parents better be prepared for their kids to be responded to JUST as freely! imagine if you had responded to that child the way you would have responded to an adult saying the same thing... of course you wouldn't- but the point is, free reign to shoot your mouth off as a kid is a good way to get your butt kicked as an adult.

i'm just glad that our experience so far in the Broadlands has been of more respectful children and intelligent parents than of disrespectful brats and oblivious parenting... you can't get rid of bad apples but I'm glad they are in the minority in our neck of the woods... :)

You talked about getting their 'butt kicked' when this child was an adult ... FWIW .. my parents gave me a 'butt kicking' (actually a warming) when I was a child, and I never had to worry when I was an adult !! You talk about being corrected quickly !!

My wife talks about how her mother used to threaten her with 'jerking a knot in your head'. Her mother never had to, just the tone put the fear of God into her.

I wonder how much there is of urban legend to that, and how much is truth.

they are referring to the shock video from awhile back where this woman goes postal on her child in the backseat of her car violenting screaming, smacking, etc while the adult stood in the door of the car. It happened in some shopping center lot if I recall

That's alot different then giving the kid a swat on the fanny ... that was abuse, a swat on the backside is correction.

Sorry I disagre. A swat on the backside is considered child abuse and assault.

Ditto ... while I was in church today, the 5 year old in the pew in front of me was acting up ... momma said, behave or I'll swat your bottom.

I hear that all the time here in Pittsburgh ...
