My dog drives me nutty!!! Our lawn looks horrendous because his pee burns huge spots all over the place. It's such an eyesore. Can anybody recommend a way to fix up the lawn or prevent this? (I know I could prevent by taking him to pee elsewhere, but he squats the minute we get out the door...):(

You can try and treat the dog, and/or treat the lawn. Treat the dog with Harper's Turf Saver, (yes it's for dogs) available at most pet supply stores, and treat the lawn with gypsum and/or lime. Pelletized gypsum will also help break up the clay. It's available in 40 lb. bags at Blue Mount. Next best thing is to just try and hose down the area after he goes.

We had the same problem. Put some pine bark down for landscaping, force the dog to only pee there (he/she will eventually get into the habit).

This is usually more of a problem with female rather than male dogs. The higher nitrogen content in the urine is what burns out the grass. It's the same effect as if you dump a pile of fertilizer on the lawn. Watering the grass after the dog urinates will dilute it enough to stop the burning, but then you have to follow the dog around with a hose!

Just curious is it better to apply Harper's to the dog with a drop spreader, or a broadcast spreader?

    It's best to apply orally.

Kinda wish some people knew about this a few years ago, would have saved our lawn by the sidewalk. We finally tore it up and put in mulch and plantings.

Now the neighbor's lawn is the one getting visited, and getting brown spots, with high rings of green grass around them.

Anyone ever had trouble with their dog's tummy when using these products? We gave ours something similar once, and he had the "runs" for several days. Could be a coincidence, but we thought it was the pills and never used them again.

I don't think it was either of the two brands cited by folks here though.

We've been using the Lawn Guard tablets from Dr. Foster and Smith for over a year and haven't had any problems with the dogs tummies or digestive systems. They love them and it really has helped with the brown spots.

I disagree - It's not just female dogs. We had a male dog and boy - we had brown spots all over the place. Also - I would hesitate giving your dog any pills/capsules. Since we lost our dog to cancer last year - I'm hesitant to put anything in an animals system that isn't natural. There are WAY too many dogs getting cancer lately IMO. We found a product called Greenum, which is a spray that you spray on the lawn after your dog pees. That worked great for us. It is hard to find tho. Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you the website.

Great, thank you so much for the replies. I'm glad y'all had some luck correcting this. I'll have to check out some of the products suggested.

tyger - give us the website - do you have to apply right when they go?

Here's the website: http://store.worldpetstore.com/greenumspray.html and yes you do need to apply it right after they go. So - you need to stand there and wait for them. It's not as convenient as giving them a pill - but it DOES work. Greenum also sells it in pill form. I can't speak for that - since we prefer the spray.
