Just a friendly reminder to drain your outdoor spigots.

If you have not yet done so, it is supposed to get near/below freezing tonight.

Mine froze last winter even though I turned off the hose bibb inside. I think it was because there was water still in it.... but how are you supposed to get the water out? it seems like you would need a "vent" past the shutoff valve so that it would let the water drain out via gravity...otherwise it just sat there for me... Am I supposed to try and siphon it out? :)

Freezing is fine.. freezing in a trapped space is not!

You shut the valve at the feed, open the hose bib all the way.. and then open the bleeder screw that is right past the valve at the feed. This allows the pipe to be open at both ends.. any water that can drain via gravity will.. and any water that freezes will have room to expand.

but have a bucket ready, sometimes the pipes do not slant down to the outside, so they may drain on you in your basement...

I have done all that successfully ..( had some water drip once I opened the bleeder screw ) thank you for your information ..

After that, are you suppose to close the hose bib at the front and the back of the house throughout the winter months ?
Or are you suppose to keep them open while keeping the shutting the valve at teh feed ?

Just wanted to add that if you have one of the NF8 vaccum breakers, you also take the time to bleed that too. Simply slide the black collar up and the remaining water on the hose bibb will come out, I included a link to help illustrate the vaccum breaker.
