Is Broadlands hosting an easter egg hunt this saturday? I thought I had remembered reading about it in one of the past newsletters, but just skimmed through the most recent newsletter online, and I don't see it anymore. I only see that the easter bunny is coming at 2pm. Was the egg hunt cancelled?

I'm pretty sure the Egg Hunt is on, rain or shine. What *has* been canceled is the Tech Committee's free pictures with the 'Spring Bunny'. While the bunny will still be present, folks will have to take their own pictures this year. We had to cancel the committee sponsored pictures because of a lack of volunteers this time around. On behalf of the Technology Committee, I appologize if this is an inconvinience to anyone, but I highly encourage everyone to come and take their own pictures with the bunny and enjoy the Egg Hunt; it's always a blast for all the kids!

Because of a sick child we were unable to attend, sadly. But I noticed that the reader board on Claiborne listed it as the "Spring Egg Hunt". Oy. We can't even call it an Easter Egg Hunt any more?

Very sad isn't it? If it weren't for Easter there would be no egg hunt!

Not that I am overly pleased with all the PC crap in existence today BUT, we are a diverse community where many people do not observe Easter yet would like to participate in an Egg Hunt. So "Spring Egg Hunt" does not bother me since the Easter Bunny and associated Egg Hunt have absolutely nothing to do with Easter from a religious standpoint.

Right, the eggs part of Easter actually traces back to the Pagan rituals before Christianity. Eggs being a sign of fertility were uses as part of the celebrations of Spring. They were used in the festivals to celebrate the Pagan Goddess, Ester.

why would someone who doesn't believe in Easter want to participate in an Easter Egg hunt? Just curious... I mean- if the HOA allowed a group to hold an event that was outside of my beliefs, I would have absolutely no interest in it, nor would I begrudge them the right to do their thing. I'd love to hear from someone who doesn't believe in Easter but wanted to have their children participate- offline is fine. i am genuinely curious.

this could be a very interesting thread...

Lots of religions seem to have the same 'timetable' of holidays as most recognized religions, especially the fall holiday season (Christmas, Chanukah, Ramadan, Kwanza, etc) so it's like they piggy-back on the big ones...then get all up in arms when their version isn't recognized.

I'm with redon1...perhaps the next time the Shiite Muslims have that 'holiday' where they get all the men and male children together and cut their heads open (Ashoura Day, which is March 2...close enough to St. Patricks Day for me!) I'll head over in a leprachaun suit and demand that they serve green beer and call it 'Ritualistic Head Cutting and Drinking Day' and see how far I get.

If you want the "Easter traditions" then participate in an egg hunt at your church where the true meaning of Easter will be addressed.
For a community event where the SOLE purpose is for children to look for eggs with candy in them, why possibly exclude children of a faith that does not believe in Easter? Did you ever think that the organizers might have deliberately left religion out of it so EVERYONE would feel welcome?

    T8erman,

Your posts usually irritate me, but I will actually have to agree 100% with you! Very good point!

Well again, what ever the name, the egg hunt really was great...complete with plenty of prize filled eggs for children to collect quite a few and the Easter bunny....or should we say "Spring Bunny"?

Agh! Anyway, this is one thing that pleasantly surprised us upon moving to Broadlands...kids could still dress in Halloween Costumes and have Halloween parties at school. (Not the case in the Fairfax schools our children attended prior to Hillside).
Good old American fun we grew up with. It is great that our country is so diverse but personally, I hope we do not lose some of these traditions in our ever-"evolving" culture? Time will tell.

Thank you again sincerely to those who organized the event.

Let me clarify one thing- I am not religious and I don't rely on community events for my son's spiritual teachings, so this is not a personal issue- just a topic of discussion.

if the sole purpose is to find eggs with candy in them, perhaps a solution is to do it ANY OTHER TIME in the spring but Easter, so it is completely secularized with no association to Easter at all. Why do you need Easter for the hunt- do it in March, maybe??

I respect all religions, and feel it's disrepectful to use a religion's holiday for an excuse to hold an event but give no recognition to the reason it came into existence anyway. If I were a devout Christian, I would be bothered by people secularizing my faith's traditions, thereby deliberately leaving my faith out- to paraphrase your words...

YES I know that the Christ and the Easter Bunny have nothing to do with each other but these days most religious holidays have fun, non- religious traditions so that the kids are interested at an early age. I find that to be a moot point since the hunt, tree and time off of work wouldn't exist BUT for the Christian holiday to begin with.

Why not just make a NEW secular event that has nothing to do with the Christian holiday so no one feels left out? Hunt eggs in March, decorate trees in November... Wal Mart would LOVe it- they can sell secular decorations year round! lol

just an opinion- not the rant of an outraged religious person. and I forgot to say that LOVE the fact that the Broadlands HA organizes and sponsors so many family events- we appreciate the efforts of the volunteers and are active members of this commmunity ourselves. so THANK YOU for all that you do- this is not to slam what you do but simply an open dialogue on an issue that many people disagree upon.... ok done!
