All the snow and ice has us planning for a summer vacation! Any suggestions for a family resort within a day's drive? We would love something with golf, water activities, hiking, and a "kids camp" for our 8 year olds (and for us to have a little free time).

When school let out early on Tuesday, we headed down there. The air temp in the water park was about 80 & the water temp was similar. It felt like we were in the tropics for about 24 hours.

I'm still sore from trying to keep up with my daughters.

I've heard good things about the Massanutten resort - good for winter or summer time. Also heard they recently opened a new water park there as well. It's about 2 hours from here near Harrisonburg.

Winter - Seven Springs in PA. It's about a 5 hour drive, but well worth it. There's a beautiful B&B called Glade's Pike Inn about 10 minutes from the slopes - great for families and shares a parking lot with a winery. The slopes are fairly open and have relatively long runs.

Summer - Outer Banks, NC - every year, we rent a house with friends and their kids (www.sunrealtync.com). Not as cheesy as the OC/DE beaches (though the cheese factor can be good for kids). We enjoy it becuase you can drive your 4x4 out onto the beach. Great golf, restaurants, activities, etc.

    Good luck!

We really love The Woods Resort just off Rt. 9 between Martinsburg and Berkeley Springs, WV, about 1.5 hours away by car. Its a beautiful location off the beaten path and peaceful yet close Martinsburg for restaurants, stores and theaters. Much of the development backs up to 23,000 acre Sleepy Creek wildlife preserve with a mountain lake and miles of trails for hiking. They have lots of activities including 36 holes of golf, an indoor recreation center with tennis, racquetball, a pool, workout room and a spa. They also have 2 large outdoor pools, tennis and basketball courts open during the summer. For more info check out: http://www.thewoodsresort.com

A couple of summers ago we went to Smuggler’s Notch in Vermont: http://www.smuggs.com/pages/summer/

They have a great kids program. I think it was an 11 hour drive.

Smuggs is probably one of the best family resorts in New England, if not the best. Been many times. It's not posh (though neighboring Stowe is), and therefore it is reasonably priced. It is just totally kid-oriented in every respect.

Williamsburg is about 2 hours from here. Is a nice area to visit in the Spring too. Busch Gardens is also located there as well as historic Williamsburg park, outlet shopping.

We were just down visiting family in the Williamsburg & Hampton Roads area. They are gearing up for the 400th anniversary celebration in the Williamsburg/Jamestown area. The big weekend down there will be May 10-13 (Mother's Day weekend). The Queen will be in town that weekend as well. (visit jamestown2007.org for more info.) We also noticed that they are expanding Great Wolf Lodge so I guess business is good for them. Busch Gardens opens (weekends only) the end of March. The Virginia Living Museum in Newport News is awesome. My 5 year old had a blast there this past weekend - it was a special reptile event.

There is LOTS to do in that area and we discover something new just about every time we visit the grandparents.

my parents live down in williamsburg---and i absolutely love it down there!!! luckily, they're close enough to jamestown and colonial 'burg...but far enough away no tourists get lost in their neighborhood ;) i can't wait until my daughter is old enough to see how neat williamsburg is!
