We recently had a repair situation for our automatic garage door opener - my worst fear was that we were looking at a full system replacement since the system is 14 years old. I contacted Cardinal Garage Door Services at the recommendation of my next door neighbor, Not only did they have a technician arrive on time within 3 hours of my call, they quickly diagnosed the problem as a minor repair, and charged me a a very modest amount.

I am impressed enough to post this endorsement for Cardinal Garage Door Services . . . the owner's name is Orlando Rodriguez, and the phone number is 571-283-5463. Orlando shared that the life expectancy for openers and door springs is about 10 years, so I'm anticipating that I'll need more major repairs soon . . . and when I do, I'll call Cardinal Garage Door Services first.

I am going on 18 years for my garage door opener. I attribute the longevity to the opener being a worm drive rather than a chain drive. Also, I bought the larger HP opener. Specs said a 1/3 HP was suggested, but I went with the 1/2 HP. My thinking was that it wouldn't work as hard to open the door. I also routinely clean and re-lubricate it.

At the same time I also check and if necessary tighten all bolts on the door and lift mechanisms.

My springs have worn out twice during this period and I have had them professionally replaced. Orlando's estimate of 10 years for springs seem to be right on. In my opinion messing with the springs is not a DIY project. I'll outsource the risk. Glad to hear Cardinal is a good source for this work.

Springs are easy as long as it's not a tension spring. Those are recommended as being done by a pro. (the wind up spring that sits at the top of the door). If you have the two long springs that go along the track, they are easy to do as they aren't under any tension when the door is open.

Openers seem to last a long long time as long as you aren't overworking them by having an undersized one or they aren't dragging dead weight due to bad springs or hardware.

We also had a good experience with doordoctorva http://www.doordoctorva.com/ . Thanks for sharing your experience tommyboy.
