Wanted to see if anyone on the forums has had to repair their garage door. If so, who do you recommend?

I had a steel door which was buckling and eventually got bad enough that it was hard getting it to close. I had Academy Door out to look at it. They gave me estimates to repair it or replace. I opted for the repair which was about 20% of the replacement cost. They basically reinforced the door panels with additional steel supports on the inside. They said they thought it should hold, but I was aware going in they would not guarantee the repair as the sheet metal already had a small tear. Long story short the repair lasted about a year, eventually the problem returned and got worse to the point that the door needed to be replaced.

I had several folks out for an estimate and ended up going with Crews who had what I felt was the best product at the best price (Academy was one of the more expensive options and would not apply what I paid for the repair towards a new door). Crews did a great job with the installation. This was about a year ago and I've been very happy with the new door so far. In my case I could have saved a few hundred bucks and some time and hassle if I had decided to replace the door initially..

We used Academy as well, last year they came out to replace the spring, they also readjusted the door. I found their prices to be reasonable, considering they came out on a Sat morning.

Someone and I am not saying who backed up into the door slightly in the early a.m. hours pulling out to work sans their coffee. There is a small tear in the sheet metal on one panel. For the most part this has been this way for the last 4 years. It just makes the door sound creaky and eventually it will degrade the panel. I am guessing you can't just replace the panel but have to go with a new door? Can you IM cost of your door as a rough idea of what I am looking at?

    Thanks

We used Door Doctor in late 2006 to replace the rotten wood garage doors the builder put in. We went with insulated steel doors. The two of them, plus installation, ran us about $1500. We also chose a decorative window panel (approved by the modification committee!) - it would have been a couple hundred cheaper without those.

We used Door Doctor to replace our doors. We had one panel that had gotten bent and they said they could replace just the panel. However, we decided to replace both doors since the other one had issues when we bought the house a few years ago and we decided to just upgrade to a quieter and insulated door.

Does anyone do normal maintenance on their chain? Mine squeaks, but I am not sure what type of lube to put on it, WD40 or more of a grease?

Replacement cost for me was around $1300 installed for a 9' insulated steel double door (R value was 12 or so). Individual panels can be replaced, but the cost will probably be prohibitive. Especially considering a new door will probably be a substantial upgrade in terms of quality, durabilty, lifespan, etc., include all new hardware (track, springs, etc.) and probably have a 1-year warranty on labor and 3+ year warranty on the parts.

We use a garage door silicone spray (not wd40) once a month on our chain & rollers and rarely have squeaking issues.

Pea, I need to buy some of that spray! Do you happen to have the name handy and/or where you buy it?

    Thanks!

Why yes I do (just ran out to the garage) it is "Blaster" GDL Lube, here is the link (so you know what to look for):
    http://www.blastergroup.com.au/garage-door-lubricant.html

I purchased it from Home Depot and I have to say this works SO MUCH better than WD40.

    Hi,

We have used Door Doctor (703-709-7933) for yearly maintenance over the past 3 years and have been pleased with the service.

Since the last response to this post was a couple of months ago, I am going to assume some folks are still reading it. I was quoted $1500.00 from Potomac Doors to replace both my garage doors with triple-layer (steel+insulation+steel) doors, springs and any other hardware needed; however, they stated if I could get 3-5 other folks to sign up as well, they would drop the price to $800.00 for everyone. This quote is good till July 14th. Please call me (Andrew) at (703) 727-5795 if interested. The only thing in it for me is hopefully a lower cost to replace my crappy wood panel garage doors.
