According to the letter that came home "..it is anticipated that the vaccine will only be provided one time at each school, with a return to the school approximately one month later for those under 10 that need a second dose."

The mist version does NOT contain thimerosal.

I am vaccinating my kids through the school, even though everyone in my house has already had confirmed H1N1. Our doc recommended vaccinating once it became available because it is possible to get it again, and believe me, you don't want to have this strand of flu twice. I was down 7 days, 4 of them with a high fever even with Tamiflu and Motrin. My children are now dealing with secondary infections, one sinus one pneumonia, as a result. I am an employee at BWHS, and these kids are coming back to school in 2 or 3 days, but they are still fevered and sick and need to stay home. They are concerned about the classes they are taking and don't want to get behind, so they are not taking the time to recuperate.

I am not an alarmist, but this virus is pretty nasty.

i am so sorry to hear that Diana- so exposure AND actually having it doesn't protect you from a repeat?? :( agoraphobia gets more attractive every day...

Wow! If contracting the live H1N1 virus does not protect you from a repeat I'm at a loss for how injecting a dead H1N1 virus will do anything!

Our pediatrician said that they're now worried about a mutation...not that it will become a worse flu, but a different one that will render the mass vaccine production useless.

Another reason not to get the shot. However, my hubby and I are empty nesters, no kids at home, so I understand parents needing their kids to get it. I'll still rely on my good immune system. :)

i remembered today that my son has a history of febrile seizures brought on a fever spike, and i do NOT want him to go thru that again. it only happened twice when he was around 2, but then again- he's never had a high fever since then.

so now i wonder- is it protecting him more to GET the shot and risk the side effects? a fever spike could be really bad for him. but if the vaccine won't prevent the flu, and he has as much chance of a spiking fever with OR without it- what the heck is it for then?!?!

    i'm soooo confused...

There are more than just two strains :) However, I would like to know out of all these cases of H1N1... have they been specifically tested for the H1N1 strain or are the individuals just turning up Influenza A positive on the rapid flu test? H1N1 will appear Influenza A positive on the rapid flu test but just because it is positive for Influenza A does not mean you have H1N1, you could simply have any Influenza A strain of flu.

My son's Dr. told us that they haven't seen any strain A yet this season so they are going on the assumption that all the positive flu tests are H1N1.

I also read that in order to confirm H1N1 they have to be sent to a true lab --- so isn't it possible H1N1 is being mis-diagnosed?

I've heard the same - H1N1 is a sub-set of Influenza A and doctors have said Influenza A has not come out yet so therefore it must be H1N1. The actual test has to be sent to a lab where it costs over $1K to perform...and that cost is paid by the patient...not insurance. So...sure, there could be misdiagnoses out there (and I'm sure there are).

it is very early for seasonal influenza to be hitting in such high numbers.
