Today I received a notice from HOA stating that my lawn is not maintained (not mowed). I live in a SW townhome.

I mowed my lawn like 3 weeks ago (just before that weeklong rain). How do they expect me to mowe now in this cold weather? The grass is not a upto your knee or something. Maybe a little grown (howmuch will it grow in 3 weeks?).

When the light in front of my house was burnt, in 2 days I got a notice. There is a house in my street. For last 2 months, they don't have the light. HOA doesn't seem to be bothered about notifying them.

I am getting a bit irritated with HOA for this lawn notice.

Perhaps you have a neighbor that calls in. ;)

Regardless, if you are in violation, simply take care of the matter and move on. You are not the first and will certainly not be the last to get a notice. Don't worry about your neighbors (unless they are in violation and you want to rat them out :devil2:), perhaps they have gotten a violation and have not taken care of it yet.

As for your grass, it will cut in cold weather just as easily as warm. :D

Oh, didn't know that the grass will cut so easily in cold weather :)

Anyhow, it is way too cold to go out and mowe. That was my concern.

I've got two words for you baskar:

    LAWN...SERVICE
    :)

Sorry, but cold weather is no excuse for not maintaining your property. If it's too cold for you to do it, you need to get someone else to.

Actually, I'd prefer to mow mine in this weather - I hate to get all sweaty!

    baskar,
While I hate to see these HOA violation notices, I am kind of glad that they do give ones for lawns that need care. The biggest visual offense around me are the four houses that border my property where their lawns are severely lacking. I am not a big fan of the HOA rules and the need to get permission to make enhancements to my home. However, I'm here and if there are rules about keeping your garbage can out of sight, there should be rules (and notices) for a much bigger offense (at least in my mind) for lawns that haven't seen a lawnmower, any fertilizer or weeding or watering. Sorry.

My lawn is in "winter/no water/it's all weeds" mode.

    Boycott my HH.

We got one too - I live in the same area and we'd actually held off for a little more rain because of the drought and we didn't want to burn the lawn since we still can't water the lawn. The funny thing is there are a number of completely dead lawns in that neighborhood that apparently we (those who just needed to mow) got the lightest of infractions cited.

Most of the bad lawns that I have seen are not dead, they are just dormant. Generally, 3 days in a row of rain or watering will bring them back.

We didn't water our lawn once all summer or fall. It turned brown. It rained. It turned green. Not a whole lot different than those who did try to water! Save yourself the aggravation and let nature do the work :)

I got one, too. It kinda hurt my pride :( because I love my garden, esp. my roses, which are still blooming (despite the cold!). I mowed my lawn the same day (rather, night!) I got the notice...

How old is your house/lawn, Silence? Some of the newer houses around here without established landscaping might have a different result. But I suspect if your house is more than about 5 years old you might ok. But that's just a guess about the grass based on what I know about the trees. Trees that have been planted in the last year or two will still need a lot of water, but once they're, say, 10 years old, they'll be fine.

Absolutely, Sharse. I know newer homes and those with seed down obviously need water. Ours is older and after a summer of kids trampling it with virtually no shade, I'm just not sure ANYTHING can kill it!

maybe someone should quote the rule to be helpful. BLSFmly, there is an actual rule on how long the grass has to be before there is a violation... I just do not have the actual document handy... but I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong. Yes, in opinion, at the end of the day, these issues are minor and when you look at it as a whole, they are a good thing to keep the community looking "decent". Some people just get lucky and do not get "caught" as quickly.

It's actually very nice that there's an actual objective rule. In our previous neighborhood, when the HOA gestapo would do its runs, the violations seemed purely subjective and based on the mood of the visiting official. I remember one time talking with the guy doing his rounds when we had just finished some landscaping and he said something along the lines of "Well, I ilke it so I'm not gonna give you a violation." Then he went on about how no one should have more or less landscaping than their neighbor - I can't even imagine trying to enforce an "equal landscaping" rule.
