Well we are new home owners and are thinking about buying mulch from the boyscouts. The question is, how much should we buy?

Is there a rule of thumb as to how many bags per tree?

Depends on what you're mulching. If you're mulching a tree, you should not mulch up the trunk, but leave a bowl around it. You could possibly get away with one bag per tree, but 1 1/2 should definitely give you coverage.

FWIW ... we mulched all of our backyard, and most of the front with 75 bags this past spring. We actually ordered more than we needed to get the lower price on quantity, then found that we used all of it.

Troop 970 will be advertising for their mulch sale in next months newsletter. Flyers will also be distributed to homes, the weekend of Feb 5. Last year we distributed over 23,000 bags of mulch and we anticipate a similiar number this year. All bags are delivered over one weekend. It is an amazing operation. For perspective one tractor trailer carries 900 bags of mulch.

As for your question. We sell three cubic foot bags. We recommend the following:

2" depth of mulch 7 bags per 100 sq ft
3" depth of mulch 10 bags per 100 sq ft
4" depth of mulch 14 bags per 100 sq ft

2" depth of mulch 70 bags per 1000 sq ft
3" depth of mulch 100 bags per 1000 sq ft
4" depth of mulch 140 bags per 1000 sq ft

Average orders for homes in this area range from 20 to 50 bags. That may give you a better idea.
