Short of a tripped circuit, does anybody have an idea why the AC unit wouldn't come on? Right now, it doesn't matter if I turn on the heat or AC, the outside fan doesn't run and my system won't doing anything. I've checked the temps on the thermostat inside and also made sure it wasn't a tripped circuit.

Any other ideas? And any recommendations for an HVAC repairman?

If it's a new home and you moved in last fall or this winter, you may need to have the HVAC people out to turn it on for you. That happened in our home when we first moved in (around end of October). just a thought

In your furance room, there's a switch on the wall that turns the power on and off. So look for a switch like the one for your lights. The builder should have marked them. You might have accidently turned it off thinking it was the light switch in your HVAC room. Just a thought. I know several other people who had this happened to them when they moved into their new home in the summer.

This issue might be a bit off topic, but I just turned on my AC today to see how it works (just moved in last week)...the previous owners had been vacant since last august. It has been on for about an hour and doesn't not seem to have cooled down the house at all....the therm still reads 80....

I did turn the therm from heat to AC :) and even get the little snowflake on the display...how long does it take to cool dwon a 2300 sq ft townhouse?

    Thanks in advance

If you're not feeling any cool air coming from the vents, and that air should reflect at least a 20 degree drop in temperature from the ambient air, you probably need to have the A/C compressor checked for a freon leak.

For Heating and Air contractor--use Bowmans Heating and Air in Sterling. They are great. They put in our new HVAC system, humidifier, and permanent air filter for about $5000 when we built our new home. Their service call is about $75. They also do duct cleaning, air condition service, etc. Duct cleaning is recommended every other year. We have all wood floors through out our home, so we do not do it often.

Sterling Carpet is also the best carpet and flooring store and is locally owned. They have a great staff and workers to install flooring products. You can also buy a remnant for about $50 and they will bind the edges for you for free. Great rugs for play areas, etc.

Plumbers is also Bowmans Heating and Air. Their father has plumbing business. Both have been in business for 15+ years, etc. Call Bowman Heating for plumber info. Bowman's can install tankless hot water heaters. Check their web site for info.

If any more help, post query and I will email or call with info. Also, if you want an energy saving hot water heater look at the Bosch or Rinnai tankless hot water heaters. You can have one installed even if your house is already been built. Endless supply of hot water--saves on energy bills. Electric or gas is great. My husband put ours in. Saves on floor space too. Recirculates water and is not wasted. Post response if interested in info. Check out Rinnai's, Bosch's, and Bowman's web sites. We have a huge one for our house which is over 4000 square feet. Our home is 6 bedrooms and over 3 baths which is about 5000-6000 heated space.

    www.rheemtankless.com (Rheem's site.)
www.boschhotwater.com (Bosch's Aqua Star info and other tankless units site.)
www.bowmanheating.com (Bowman's Heating and Air web site, parts info/ordering, and coupon offers.)

My husband is also a manager at Tasc as an elec. engineer; and we know all the ins and outs of building. I was a sales manager at Georgia Pacific for 15 years plus before I left to become a food scientist. Thanks. Sorry for all info.

We thought others will be interested. Also, check out XM's Satellite program by Gary Sullivan (and web site for info) for helpful Homeowner Hints on Channel 165. Schedule is on Gary's site and downloads of programs for tankless hot water heaters, etc.

    www.garysullivanonline.com (Gary Sullivan's site/info. Great info.)

PM us for info if needed on tankless hot water heaters.

Another thing to check. The same thing happened to me this weekend and my HVAC guy suggested checking the control wires that run to the thermostat. I took the face of the thermostat off and checked - the one that controls the a/c (yellow one) had come loose.
