Does anyone have any recommendations for a deck or porch builder? Our portico in front of our house needs to be replaced and we are trying to get some preliminary recommendations and quotes for replacing it or turning it into an actual porch.

If you have any recommendations on who to use or who to avoid I would appreciate it.

We used EG&J - Corbin Nathan, when we needed work done on our back deck. He did a great job and we would recommend him highly. He has an ad in this month's newwletter.

Kenny Williams Construction did a great job on ours last year. They're family owned, have 20+ years of experience, showed up everyday ontime and stayed late to get the work done fast. Their rates were comparable with other good buiilders and they have a Class-A license.

Kenny Williams did our back deck too... not a front portico, though.

ummm....so we ended up NOT using Loudon Deck and Fence Co. I had another guy come by on a referral--and it's just him and his brother, and his dad part time. The company is called "Bilaw", and they start building in a few weeks!

If you deal with Whitestone INSIST on talking to the owner, Herb Aman Jr. We had our deck & porch done by them 2 years ago and JUST found out that they did not put us in for the final inspections!!!!!

Interesting. So how did you initiate the final inspection? What are the repercussions for not having the final inspection?

The previous owners of our TH used Kenny Williams, and had lots of great things to say about him.

If you have the permit number, you should be able to just call it in and schedule the final inspection. Assuming everything was done to code, you'll have no problems getting the final approval. Otherwise, you'll need to make repairs to bring it to code.

The repercussions of not having the final inspection is that the county will not recognize that you have the improvement on your house. Lets say you're getting your basement finished, the county will not recognize that you have the additional square footage/bedroom/bathroom and your home will not assess or command the same value when you go to sell it. You could also run into problems with a buyer who will make an issue of getting the final inspections approved prior to settlement. It just has the potential of complicating things down the road...

You also run the risk of codes being updated - what was legal when you work was done may not be legal if you go get permits/inspections later on.

I just wanted to express how absolutely please i am with the work of our deck builder. Bilaw, INC called me Thursday morning to let me know they were digging footers. They had the inspector there first thing friday, By 8:00 friday night they had the floorboards down. Saturday they put the rest of it up, by 3:30 Saturday, i was drinking Miller Lite on my deck. They were great to talk to while they built. Two brothers and their Dad. I cannot say enough good things about them.

They even had to move two of the posts in about a foot b/c of the electric line. He let me know they had to move them, and that he would credit me the price difference of losing those 12 square feet. Honesty?!?!?! what's that!?!

If anyone has any building done, make sure your builder does NOT trust the gas company when they spray paint the lines. The guy completely missed it. Luckily, they said when they dig--they dig like they're going to hit something b/c they don't trust these people!

    But i digress... http://www.bilawdecks.com/

    Check out http://www.vadeck.com/

We used them for building our current deck and the one in our previous home. They do great work at a great price.

We had ours built by Starbust Construction and ran into the worst customer service with them. The deck was built very well...except for a few boards that didn't get screwed down properly or had huge knots in them that didn't match the quality of wood we paid for. It took about 30 calls (literally) and 3 months to get them to come back and fix it. They even set up two appointments to come and fix the problem, then just didn't show up. I had to take off work to wait for them, since they needed me there to show them the problems... so for them not to show for appointments twice got extremely aggravating.

So great deck, if they build it correctly... just hope you don't need to call them back out because they are the kind of company that gets your money and runs

I'd stay away from Holloway. They did do a beautiful job on our patio (when they showed up). The deck and gazebo was a nightmare - the gazebo was never completed. We were lied to repeatedly, and blatant/obvious errors were made, which we had to fight to correct. Everything looks "acceptable" at this point, but I'm sure we could have paid the same to another company to do it right and without the headaches. Ironically, we were warned about their shady conduct beforehand.
