    Howdy folks,
We just moved to this community a couple of weeks back and are thrilled to be here. We are looking for a Contractor for building us a deck. Did any of you have any experience with any contractor ? Or do you have a recomendation ? How are retail stores in comparison ( HomeDepot, lowes etc)

My advice ... don't use the retail store's contractors ... unless you want a run of the mill, pressure-treated lumber deck. If you want something that is more architectually appealing, find a custom deck builder, but be prepared to spend some bucks for a good one.

We and several of our neighbors have used Northern Virginia Deck and Patio. I was really pleased but they were not cheap. They were competitive and did an outstanding timely job.

We've decided to use Inside-Out after several neighbors raved about them. Email me for the # if you'd like.

Some additional advice ... don't rush into building the deck for this summer ... take your time, check out some decks that were built by the different contractors, and then build during the 'off months' of fall and late winter/spring. It may cost you less as you won't be in the peak season.

While Neil has some great advice, I found that alot of the contractors are so busy that they no longer offer off season discounts!

Thanks a lot for your posts friends. I highly appreciate it. I googled for "Northern Virginia Decks and Patio" but got VA decks and Patio. Are they one and the same ?

We are using Woodscape. They came in significantly lower than some of the other "premium" deck builders and their work is just as good.

The builder we used is the one you found- Virginia Deck & Patio. I thought Mike's prices were very reasonable and everything was done professionally from start to finish. I am not sure if hberg is thinking of the same one... but it sounds like it.

Here's and update. I called up Mike and he said that he is not interested in doings decks form Townhomes. I guess with the high demand, he is looking to maximizing his profits. Any other suggestions ?

We just had a deck put on in June and Horizon did a great job. We live in a townhouse and it didn't seem to be an issue.

I can't wait until there is a slump in people needing decks and home improvements (although that may not happen in my lifetime...). I am STILL looking for my handyman-it's become almost a joke around my neighborhood-we've called 8 people to fix our rotten wood trim-of those, we've only gotten 1 quote which was outrageous-I think they see "Ashburn" and double the price. Some people never called back, some people said they'd give us an estimate-still waiting, some people are out of the handyman business for the more lucrative remodeling business. I guess business is booming. All I know is what goes around comes around, and I have a memory like an elephant...

I hear you mdcrim. Why do people advertise if they are not going to return calls or give estimates? They should at least give the courtesy of returning a call or telling you they cannot give an estimate at this time due to an increase in business. It's awful when people say they'll do something and don't. I have had the same experiences.

Same one! Mike was great! No discount for building in off season either. But saw the part about not doing townhouses, that's too bad he did that. I had a really high opinion of him too.

I need a handyman too, to if you do end up finding one (or I do) then Post his name or contact here. We have some cracks on our patio (overhead) that VM fixed but are back (go figure, poor workmanship) and have to fix them.
