We have a shiny oak mantle and though it looks decent it does not match our furniture so we've been thinking about trying to paint it with a white semi-gloss that matches the window trim. Wondering...anyone had any luck doing this or any advice to offer? Not sure if we need to sand it first, etc...

    Thanks for any assistance.

It probably has a urethane coating so its a good idea to sand and prime before you paint.

Neil is correct. With pretty much any wood, if it is sanded and primed it can be painted and in this case should match the trim color.

We painted our mantel. Sanded it VERY lightly at first, then did a coat of primer and 3 or 4 coats of paint. (We used a dark color, thus the many coats.)
