    Mason Launches Energy Roundtable Series

    Many of us hear about climate change, alternative energy, clean coal and the like, but when politicians, pundits, colleagues and peers talk about energy, we don’t always have enough information to draw informed conclusions.

    To remedy the information gap, Mason will host four roundtable panel discussions that will examine the future of energy. Held throughout February, the roundtables will feature a moderator and three expert panelists who will discuss a chosen topic. They will also explore the pros and cons of each energy type in an atmosphere of lively, though civil, debate.

    Following brief introductory presentations by each panelist, the moderator will invite questions from the audience.

    The roundtables will be held on the Fairfax Campus. They are open to all, but RSVPs are requested. The dates and topics follow.

    * Tuesday, Feb. 3: “Clean Coal: Myths, Realities and Possibilities.” Panelists are Jay Braitsch of the Office of Fossil Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy; Lauren Glickman of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network; and Lisa Moerner of Dominion Virginia Power. The event will be moderated by Frank Dukes of Mason’s Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution. Seating will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center, Third Floor Meeting Room C.

    * Wednesday, Feb.11: Focus on liquid fuels (oil, biofuels, hydrogen, etc.). Seating will begin at 7 p.m. in Research I, Room 163.

    * Tuesday, Feb. 17: Focus on nuclear energy. Seating will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Johnson Center, Third Floor Meeting Room C.

    * Wednesday, Feb. 25: Focus on renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal, etc.). Seating will begin at 7 p.m. in Student Union Building II, Room 5.
