I noticed some mold on the ceiling of our garage. Any suggestions for a good drywall repair service or handyman? I've already gotten an estimate for fixing the leak on the roof, but it doesn't include the drywall repair. Also looking for any recommendations of someone who can do both the roof and drywall repair. Thanks.

It might be worth waiting to repair the dryway to make sure the roof is fixed first - no sense in having to repair it twice - assuming the area affected with mold is not too huge. With it being in the garage ceiling, you and your family probably won't be lingering around it too long anyway.

Dryway repair (again, assuming the area isn't too big) can be done pretty cheaply by the average homeowner without any fancy tools. You just cut out the moldy area plus a little more to form a rectangular shape, making sure that the sides that run parallel to the roof joists end in the middle of a joist so you have something to attach the new drywall to. Cut the new piece to the right shape (make sure you get the same thickness as the existing drywall) and screw it into the joists with 1 1/4" drwyall screws every 8 inches or so, countersinking them slightly. Then just apply and smooth some joint compound, let it dry, lightly sand, and you're done.

    Hi,

I don't know if this is the same customer I meet with yesterday, if so, you need to call a black mold specialist asap! Trust me, black mold removal of this type is not something you can do yourself, you need a specialist to determine first if this is toxic. Also, the black mold is inside the wall, not just on the sheet rock. Thank You, Steven

Very Important: Please understand, no insurance company will cover black mold removal, it's the homeowners sole responsibility to keep the inside of the home dry. First, to prevent the spread of black mold, you need to hire a qualified roof repair specialist to stop the roof leak because black mold feeds on moisture. Second, have a black mold test the area to determine if the mold is toxic.

Please read the following information about black mold! http://www.toxic-black-mold-info.com/prevent.htm
