I shop in Safeway in Reston often for lunch near my office. We also have Safeway here up the street, which I shop at often as well. Safeway should all be company stores to my knowledge. Yes they are in different counties, but are only about 12 miles apart.

By chance I saw an item on sale on the shelf for 2for$5 at lunch.. I thought 'hrmm.. good price, I should get some next visit to the store at home'. Yesterday, I go into the store to get the item.. here in Ashburn the item is 2for$6!!

This really pisses me off - when a single chain charges more in one town vs another.. when they are so close. This isn't comparing prices of DC to NYC. I'm irked enough to even contact the company and see what their response is.

yep I have felt that other times with other companies

we all can pick up the phone and vent to the ceo in san fran is not that hard to get a hold of. ;)

ok i have my silly little story here

I am in best buy or maybe it was circuit city down in woodbridge va. i buy something and I was overcharged.

I go back in have to find the manager and he becomes a prick about this.

So i pick up the cell phone and call the police and tell them I was robbed in best buy or whatever:) of course the officer asks all these questions like they do.

Anyway my point is if I walked out of that store accidentally with something I would have been arrested. yet the store over charges me and they get away with it which made my life hell to get it back.

back to the police officer on the phone when he hears the whole story and I tell him he needs to arrest the store he breaks out laughing he goes I know where you are coming from and that has happened to me also

I made this phone call just because it was so unfair yet I knew the police were not coming over to arrest the store

the big picture back to you steve you can vent yourself just like i did and come away with a laugh.

Anyway call the ceo of safeway tell your story and get a laugh from it.

before I forget it everybody on monday call your wife's boss and tell the boss to tell your wife you love her .:D they will think you all are a little crazy, but you know what they will walk away with a good feeling. we all need some of that because of all the horrible news that keeps happening on the planet

    no more no less

I don't like it either, but our economy (even the grocery store) is free market. Safeway is pretty busy these days, so most people don't seem to mind being ripped off.

We gave up on Safeway shortly after they opened up. We simply got tired of all the expired date food they try to sell.

It isn't specific to Safeway. If you read the fine print (if there is any) in the sale ads you can see that often it says that it only applies to so-and-so stores only. And if you check the sales ad online you usually have to select your local store because prices can be different.

I hope you were arrested for filing a false police report and/or making a false statement to a police officer.

and i am not going to play your game;)

the big picture is i was telling one my stories and you are twisting it into something it is not.

you can respond to this but i will not play your silly game

this will be the last time i respond to one of your vindictive posts that you always seem to think you are sooo smart. the better story is play a game of chess with me and we will see how smart you really are.
yes i mean real chess and we can have all of ashburn there then how tough will be then guy.:D

i am very serious about playing you in a gentleman's game of chess. and if i lose which is not very likely i will get up and shake your hand and go you won this round my good friend but we play again someday and lets see if i win that game you are as respectable. yes my uncle god rest his soul was a chess champion.

brim stop being the little bully some of the time it will make you so much better. yes it will believe me.

I highly doubt Brim would drive the whole way up here to play you in a game of chess. As for his remark, It's kind of funny, I was thinking the same thing that he had said in his post, before I even saw it. As you said, there's lots of bad things happening in the world. Let's leave the police to deal with more serious/valid issues.

I'm familar with the store-specific sales... usually that is more inventory related or to drive certain factors with the store. I've worked grocery and my entire family has at some stage of their life :)

In this case, in both stores the item were on sale. It just so happens they have two different sale prices... regular.. and cashburn.

And gryphon.. free market is one thing.. but I equate this to looking at the style of car the guy drives up to the store in. If it's a rich car, the clerk charges a different price. Both stores are owned and operated by the same group.

I get your frustration, but could it be that the stores here in Ashburn also have a much higher cost of doing business (i.e. leases, land, salaries?) than even in Reston?

I honestly don't know, but that would justify a higher price here in Ashburn. Safeway sucks so I hope you boycott them anyway :)

Thats my point...every post doesn't have to have a "funny' story or some aside in it. And I didn't twist anything.

I don't know how to play chess nor do I care to learn, but I would be happy to play you in Operation...chess may take brains, but I defy you to get that wishbone out without touching the sides. I don't think my post was vindictive, it's the truth. It's ludicrous to call and waste law enforcement's time with nonsense like that. I also never claimed to be smarter than anyone...clearly, I don't know how to play chess.

    ha...ok, Churchill!

There's nothing worse than that buzzing sound when you touch the sides just as the wishbone was almost out. I hate it when that happens.

Nothing says "FUN!" like a drunken night of strip Operation. ;)

Back to the topic. Every so often, I will notice that the price of some items, especially when it is a clearance sale item, are more expensive at the Target in Reston versus the Sterling location.

That is COMPLETELY dependent upon who you are playing with. Or, I guess, how much you've had to drink!

In a chain like Safeway, my bet is that their prices are set at either a national or regional HQ. The price tags are sent out and the stores just reflect what they've been given. All driven by the local market.

I have a friend that used to be into retail with the Mobil Marts. What you are seeing is a practice called "Localization." And one of you hit it on the head: The stores will charge what the local market is willing to pay. It's just like with gas... why do I pay almost $3 for regular here, when just down RT 15 it's closer to $2.75?

    It's the market.

Drunken Strip Operation? I was more a fan of nude twister myself.

I don't see the Reston grocery shopping area more 'competitive' then here. Especially since a good portion of the business at the one in Reston I'm talking about (South Lakes) is based on the local walking population (seniors). That's a captive audience :)

'What the market will bear' is profiteering out here. They are not cut-throught prices in Reston.. its just inflated out here. It's also why we keep seeing the prices climb and climb and climb out here.. even as new competition opens. Normally that would infer more competition.. instead its not helping.

We have so many choices. If we don't want to pay that much, we can go elsewhere. They set the price that way because enough people are willing to pay it.
